Chapter 141: 141 How are you here? (Add more)
Chen Xu instinctively stepped backward, a natural reaction, and after retreating a few steps, he realized, the noodle shop was so small, where could he retreat to?
He stopped in his tracks and let the thick fog envelop his entire body.
In an instant, everything before his eyes turned into a vast expanse of white, and he could barely make out the front door just two meters away.
He looked back, realizing that the fog had engulfed the entire noodle shop. He could no longer see the wall inside; his vision was a blurry white.
He walked toward the direction of the wall, and after taking six steps, he could faintly make out a hole in the wall.
“The maximum visibility is about four meters,” he estimated silently.
Then, he stepped back to the position of the door. He took out a flashlight from his backpack, turned it on at its brightest setting, and shone it inside, but the intense light piercing through the thick fog still only illuminated a white blur.
Step by step, he moved forward, and when he was about five meters away from the wall, he could vaguely see it through the beam of the flashlight.
It seemed, strong flashlights weren’t much help, only increasing visibility by about a meter at most.
He felt somewhat disappointed. After turning off the flashlight and stowing it back in the side pocket of his backpack, he noted it was daytime and the flashlight wasn’t useful; but come nighttime, it could still come in handy.
Next, he tried flicking the light switch, but no lights came on.
This didn’t surprise him.
Then, he walked into the kitchen, turned on the tap, and after a hissing sound, only a few drops fell, and then stopped.
No electricity, no water, coupled with the recent war and this fog.
Just from this information, he could not infer what the situation was like in this dream world.
“The first stage goal is to figure out exactly what happened. Considering the war just happened recently, there should be survivors. Where shall I look for them?”
He thought for two seconds, and then he had an idea.
A few hundred meters away, there were several high-rise office buildings. Structures like these typically have underground parking built to civil defense standards; undoubtedly, people would have taken refuge there during the war.
With a decision made, he stepped out the door and walked into the dense, almost impenetrable fog.
All around him was silence; he was accustomed to this quietness from his previous two dreams and didn’t find it unbearable.
But, looking around, the thick fog blanketed everything, limiting visibility to just a few meters around him. It felt as though he was trapped within a small space, creating an intense suffocating feeling.
With each step forward, the road seemed to extend a bit further.
After walking about a dozen meters, he entered into the area of the road, and a vehicle appeared in his line of sight—specifically, a red tail light. As he got closer, he could see the entire vehicle.
The car was almost flattened, with a deep dent on its roof, and several shards of broken glass on the ground.
He stopped, puzzled about what could have flattened the car as there was nothing left over it.
After thinking for a while without any clue, he decided not to waste time there and continued walking on, but became more alert.
Subconsciously quickening his pace and relying on his memory, he crossed the road and when he reached the other side, he spotted a hole in the road half a meter deep with visible dirt at the bottom.
“Was it a shell?”
He thought but did not stop, continuing forward, eager to reach the nearest office building.
A few hundred meters away would normally take just over a minute to run.
But in this world shrouded in thick fog, it felt as though danger could lurk at any moment, forcing him to stay alert and tread carefully.
Five minutes later, he could faintly see the exterior wall of the office building and quickened his pace, finding an entrance and walking inside the building.
Once inside, the fog seemed lighter.
However, the light had dimmed, and visibility became even worse.
He took out his flashlight, turned it on, found the stairs, and walked down to the underground parking lot.
He gently pushed open the door and listened carefully with his ears to the side, but heard nothing.
“No one?”
He frowned, “Or are they resting?”
Here, the fog was so light it hardly affected his vision.
He tiptoed out quietly, shining his flashlight around.
The parking lot was somewhat empty; out of ten parking spaces, there was only one car.
Either the war happened at midnight, or when the war occurred, or after, the people in this building had driven their cars away.
He walked through the entire parking lot with his flashlight, not seeing a single person.
Had they all perished, or had they been evacuated?
He speculated in his mind, tending more towards the latter, as he had not seen a single body along the way.
“However, it’s also possible that the survivors have gathered together.”
He didn’t give up and decided to check the nearby building. He walked towards the exit of the parking lot.
The further he walked, the denser the fog became. When he stepped out of the exit, he was once again enveloped by the world seemingly made of white fog.
“Ah—”
Suddenly, he heard a woman’s scream, a sign of delight in his heart, there really were survivors.
The scream was distant, at least a few hundred meters away in the direction of eight o’clock.
He immediately started running. Judging by that scream, the woman was likely in danger.
While running, he pulled out a short stick from his waist, flicked it with force, and it extended into a meter-long staff.
Now, he was no longer the novice who first entered the dream world. In his second dream, he had spent some time learning some combat skills and had experienced a battle between life and death. He was not afraid of the impending combat.
Running faster, he felt he was quick enough, so he slowed down.
“Where is it?”
He didn’t make a sound, instead, he tilted his head, listening carefully to the surrounding noises.
In such an environment, beyond four meters, he was blind. Calling out in the presence of a potential enemy was virtually suicidal.
He really wanted to save_DEBUG: ield:endывendspan_conversationsave the survivor, but he was not about to risk his own life.
Moreover, more than a minute had passed, and the woman might have already been harmed.
He slowly moved forward, step by step.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him, very close. His heart tightened, and he swiftly turned around to see a figure’s silhouette appearing in his field of vision. Instinctively, his swinging staff had already struck out.
Whoosh.
The staff cut through the air, emitting a whistling sound, and ultimately hovered just above the figure’s head.
Chen Xu, initially calm, was taken aback and lost his voice, “How are you here?”
