Chapter 71 - 71: Are You Two Putting On A Show?

"Mommy, Mommy! What's going on with you and my scumbag dad? Are you back together?" Kane asked, trying to get some answers.

From what he had observed over the past few days, he was starting to think the so-called scumbag wasn't so bad.

Aside from his weird mood swings, he was rich, good-looking, and treated kids well...

"Watch your language, kiddo. There's nothing going on," Chantelle said gently.

"But I think he likes you, Mommy!" Kane said with a grin.

"Hmm?" Chantelle raised an eyebrow, now curious.

"Why do you think that?"

"The last time I drew a little tortoise on him, he took me to the hospital right away because he thought I had ADHD. But when you drew a big tortoise on him, he didn't seem to mind... I think he actually liked it," Kane said seriously, sharing his thoughts.

"He was just being polite because he was in our home. Don't overthink it, Kane. I don't like him anymore!" Chantelle huffed.

Daniel had been her sworn enemy for years, and she had no intention of being friendly with him. She took a sip of her chocolate milk and her mind drifted off again.

Ding ding! Ding ding!

Chantelle's phone rang loudly, pulling her back to reality. She sat up straighter and pulled her phone from her pocket.

The screen showed new messages from the family group chat, which included her, Kane, and his sister, Steph.

As she read Steph's messages, her eyes widened in alarm. She quickly motioned for Kane to come closer.

"Did you see the messages?" Chantelle asked Kane.

"I did. Mom, do you think I can still turn my phone off now?" Kane asked nervously.

"Hmm, I think so..." Chantelle was about to do the same when another message popped up.

Princess Steph: Don't even think about turning your phones off, you two! I know you're trying!

Chantelle sighed and quickly typed a reply.

Chantelle: Darling, how's your tour going? Did you like the present Mommy got you?

Chantelle quickly shifted into her caring mother mode, acting as if she hadn't just tried to dodge her daughter moments ago.

Steph was Kane's older sister, born only a minute earlier than him, and the only girl among Chantelle's triplets.

She looked exactly like Chantelle when she was young, with striking green eyes and delicate features.

But personality-wise, she was just like Daniel—too smart and too serious for her age.

A year ago, a casting agent saw her on the street, and now she was a child model on tour for the Spring/Summer fashion season.

Steph Bently was the only person Kane was genuinely afraid of.

No one knew why, but despite all his mischief, she was the one who could tame Kane. He called her Princess Steph and never dared to disobey her.

Even Chantelle sometimes felt a little jealous of their close bond.

Steph: Dearest Mommy, could you explain why you and Kane aren't back yet, even though you promised you'd be home before my birthday?

Chantelle: Umm... Kane really likes the chocolate milk here, so I decided to let him enjoy it for a few more days. I promise I'll visit next month, for sure!

Kane, who had been quietly trying to stay out of trouble, now had no choice but to speak up.

Kane: That's right, Sis! You have to try this chocolate milk. Princess, I've been really good lately. We'll come home soon, okay?

Steph: Oh? Is it that good? Hmm... do you think a hundred million dollars is enough to buy the milk production line...?

Chantelle was speechless. Her kids were too smart for their own good.

Kane: Mommy, my stomach hurts. Can you take me to the toilet?

Chantelle: Of course, darling.

Steph: Are you two putting on a show for me?

Before Steph could say anything else, Chantelle and Kane quickly left the chat.

Chantelle sighed, hoping to enjoy her mug of chocolate milk in peace. However, as she scrolled through Facebook, a few headlines immediately caught her attention.

"Daniel Wilson, The Prince of Easthan — A Heartless Playboy!"

"Third Party Ends Daniel & Kate's Engagement..."

"Chairwoman of the Charity Association or Mistress?"

Chantelle had just read the top three trending headlines on Facebook. The fourth headline was even more shocking.

"Wedding Bells for Daniel Wilson? Exclusive Family Portrait!"

This headline and the first three hinted that Daniel Wilson was unfaithful to his fiancée.

At first, Chantelle was confused, but she quickly composed herself and even found it amusing.

As she skimmed through the articles, she noticed that the phrase "last night" kept appearing repeatedly.

Last night, Chantelle saw Kate Bentley kissing another man before he took her away.

Chantelle thought Kate might have a new boyfriend. She wondered how Daniel became involved in this mess.

"Mommy, how can you still laugh?" Kane asked, looking upset.

Kids often show their feelings more openly than adults.

Kane was angry at whoever was trying to harm his mom. He quickly pulled out his child-friendly laptop and started typing.

Soon, he successfully pushed all the paid articles down the search results. Anyone who tried to open them would only see an error page.

Chantelle was never bothered by any online gossip, but seeing her son work so hard to protect her touched her heart.

She had her own way of fighting back—she had asked Calvin to set up a media company long ago to fight against Kate.

Seeing the Facebook articles reminded her of something from the night before.

During the cake-cutting ceremony, Daniel had already left the Wilson residence.

What time did he leave? Where did he go? Why was he being so secretive?

Something didn't feel right.

In less than an hour, all the trending articles Kate and Ruby had pushed online were taken down. But many people had already seen them.

One of them was Roman, Kate's protective father. The moment he read the article, he was ready to fight whoever had hurt his daughter.

"Kate, is this true? Did Daniel sleep with you and then leave you?" he asked over the phone.

"Dad, it's not my fault! Daniel canceled the wedding!" Kate snapped, feeling both ashamed and hurt. Her father's words cut deeper than she expected.

"So, was it really Daniel you were with last night? Are you absolutely sure?" Roman asked, sounding both shocked and doubtful.

"Of course, Dad! Who else could it be but Daniel? What are you trying to say?" Kate cried, feeling hurt by his doubt. "Don't you trust your own daughter? My name has already been dragged through the mud!"
