"Fuck!"

Hearing Reesi's words, Luo An could no longer continue chatting with Potante Byrne, nodded at him, and immediately took the folder and walked out of the team leader's office at a brisk pace.

In the corridor, Luo An and Reesi hurried towards the elevator while asking,

"What exactly happened?"

"Ten minutes ago, LAPD went to investigate a house based on a report and found a corpse in one of the rooms."

Both entered the elevator, and Reesi's face looked awful:

"People die or go missing every day in Los Angeles, LAPD thought it was a routine case until they saw the body..."

"But the body's tongue was missing, right."

Exiting the elevator, Luo An continued Reesi's words, striding towards the Special Investigation Team while asking:

"What does the victim's death scene look like? What was the cause of death?"

Reesi shook her head, following Luo An into the Special Investigation Team:

"I don't know, the LAPD didn't say, they just urged us to hurry up and get someone from the Evidence Processing Department to the scene.

But I asked a female LAPD officer, and I learned from her that several officers who saw the crime scene vomited on the spot."

"..."

Luo An's eyes twitched; he gestured to Reesi to quickly contact the Evidence Processing Department, then looked at Mona in the office area and asked:

"Mona, how is the investigation for the first three victims coming along?"

"Going through the process."

Mona relentlessly typed on the computer keyboard, not lifting her head to answer:

"The first victim, Council Chairman Hisman, the second victim was a Navy officer, and the third victim, a church Priest, these two have different last names but their first names are both James.

On the surface, the three do not seem to have any connection, but they share one commonality:

They were all wealthy, and they also had some information that I can't access at the moment."

Reesi had finished contacting the Evidence Processing Department and then walked out of the equipment room. Hearing Mona's words, she casually said:

"Maybe the killer hates the rich, or maybe these three did something that hurt the killer or the killer's family... a case of revenge or retaliation."

"There's a possibility."

Luo An took the equipment handed to him by Reesi, suited up, and told Mona:

"Keep searching for the connection between the first three victims, inform Michelle when she returns to go to the Evidence Processing Department, and wait for the autopsy reports of the Priest and Navy officer."

Mona didn't turn around, grabbed her coffee, and downed it in one gulp:

"OK."

———

The SUV sped through the streets of Los Angeles like a streak of black lightning, and after ten or so minutes, it arrived at the scene of the fourth case.

To Luo An's surprise, the crime scene this time was not in an upscale community or a single-family apartment of the middle class but a common building where ordinary people in Los Angeles lived.

The kind with four to five households on each floor.

Arriving on the fourth floor, where the crime scene was located, Luo An's nose twitched and he immediately smelled an indescribable odor of blood mixed with a fishy stench, as well as a stronger scent of vomit around the stairwell.

"*#%¥..."

Luo An's complexion changed, he cursed softly, and despite the discomfort, he moved forward and pulled out his golden FBI badge, displaying his identity to two LAPD officers at the door.

Then, amidst the frightened and admiring gazes of the two officers, Luo An and Reesi put on professional gloves and shoe covers, and slowly walked into the room.

Just entering the doorway, Luo An astutely noticed that the gap under the front door had been tampered with, presumably the killer didn't want the odor to escape from the room.

Continuing forward, there was a bathroom on the left with nothing amiss. Passing the bathroom, they entered the living room.

There were three deep red sofas arranged in a T-formation in the living room, across from which was a television covered in dust.

Luo An and Reesi slowly approached the center and largest sofa, the next second, Reesi's pupils constricted, her complexion changed, she covered her mouth with her hand, and quickly stepped out of the room.

I didn't throw up, but the impact was a bit overwhelming and needed a moment to recover.

On the dark red sofa sat a middle-aged Caucasian bald man, his mouth stuffed with a white towel that was wrapped around to the back of his head, eyes wide and face contorted in horror.

From the bald man's neck down to his lower abdomen, the entire front part of his body along with the skin on both arms was missing, laid out flat and folded neatly on the coffee table in front of the victim like a shirt.

Various insects were crawling freely over the skinless body.

"..."

Looking at the dreadful state of the victim, Luo An's brows slightly furrowed, and after a moment of silence, he began to meticulously examine the rest of the room.

Before long, the forensic team agents arrived, and then...

They didn't vomit. After all, they are professionals, even though shock was clearly written across their faces; this kind of crime scene was rare, after all.

"Thank you for your hard work."

Luo An reached out to shake hands with an agent from the forensic team and pointed to the room's windows, saying:

"The gaps in these windows have been tampered with by the killer, probably to prevent odors from escaping the room.

Take a close look, you should be able to find useful clues related to this."

"No problem."

The forensic team agents, wearing masks and showing no change in their expression, looked at Luo An with respect filled eyes.

After leaving the crime scene, Reesi immediately approached Luo An in the hallway, briefly sharing the information she had just obtained from a neighbor:

"The victim's name is Bartles, 39 years old, no wife or children, an alcoholic, often brought street girls home overnight, worked in a leather factory, was a regular worker."

"Doesn't sound like a wealthy man."

Without any visible reaction, Luo An glanced at the vomit near the staircase entrance, and with Reesi, moved to a window at the other end, opened it to catch a breath of fresh air, and asked:

"Is there surveillance?"

"No."

Reesi spread her hands:

"The building manager said there used to be surveillance, but the residents of this building are all sorts.

They complained that the surveillance was an invasion of their privacy, so soon after one camera was damaged, another would break, and over time no one was willing to install free surveillance just for others to destroy."

"Truly an embodiment of the federal spirit of liberty."

Luo An shook his head speechlessly, took a deep breath of fresh air, and not smelling anything sweet, he patted Reesi's shoulder and headed to the stairs:

"Let's head back to the Special Investigation Team first, we'll discuss further once the forensic team is done."

Reesi quickly followed Luo An on the stairs, asking in a low voice:

"I heard from Mona that you plan to transfer five people from Bi's department to work on this case together.

Out of these five, how many do you plan to keep in our Special Investigation Team?"

"I don't know, it depends."

Luo An casually replied:

"Maybe one, maybe two, maybe even three; after all, our Special Investigation Team is made up of seven people."

Reesi nodded thoughtfully, then suddenly had a thought, chuckled, and said:

"You're summoning five people this time, wouldn't one of them be the killer in this case? That's how it's played out in TV dramas."

"If one of them is really the killer in this case, I'll go buy a lottery ticket immediately, and if I win a billion, I'll give you ten US dollars."

Opening the SUV door, Luo An thought for a moment and then closed it, turning to Reesi and said:

"By the way, go to the factory where Bartles worked and find out what's going on, make sure to figure out when he started to go missing."

"No problem."

Reesi nodded her agreement, immediately started the SUV, and drove off.

Luo An didn't rush back to the Special Investigation Team. The discovery of the four victims was happening too fast, hardly giving him any time to think it through.

Luo An decided to take a walk, and mull over the details of the case carefully.
