Chapter 154: The pearl and the spare.
"Can you take the handcuffs off first." Mei Mei urged the men that had brought Jingzhe in.
They did so and then apologized for the misunderstanding because they had just received word from their boss that he had not told them to handcuff him. All he said was that he should be found and taken to Mei Mei’s house.
With their job done, they left.
As soon as they left, Mei Mei looked at Mingzhe. "Are you sleeping over or returning to the cave you have been pretending to hide in ever since the dreaded trio moved here? I have been wanting to have a conversation about that by the way."
Mingzhe suddenly realized that he had a mysterious phone silent call which was silent as his phone did not ring. He put the phone to his ear and left the living room, walking in the direction of the kitchen.
"He is definitely sleeping over." She mumbled.
Jingzhe was impatient, he needed answers so he covered the little space between them and put his hands on Mei Mei’s arms. "What happened to Mingzhu?"
Mei Mei’s eyebrows slowly moved up and she scoffed lightly. "Tch! Is Mingzhu the only apple of your eyes? You have not asked me how I am even once and....." She broke off, gasping and covering her mouth.
This answer reminded her of all the times her father would return from work and he would carry her and ask about her day. After they giggled, hugged and exchanged kisses on the cheek, he would finally remember her mother.
Whenever he greeted her mother first, she would sulk sometimes. She was the number one daddy’s girl in the world.
The words, ’Is your daughter the only apple of your eye?’ had been words her mother used often.
"Good God, I am turning into my mother!" She exclaimed.
Jingzhe shook her awake, "Meilin, what happened to Mingzhu? It is not that I am ignoring you but you said that she cried and I was arrested roughly like a chicken thief, put in a helicopter and brought back here." He looked back at the door. "I will go and see her."
Mei Mei sighed. How could Mingzhu doubt how much her new daddy love her? From the looks of things, she was the precious pearl in his hands and Meilin was just the spare dull bonus pearl which was added to sweeten the deal.
"She is sleeping, if you go up and see her tight now you will wake her up." She stopped him. "Have you eaten?"
"I will just go and peek a little to make sure that she is fine." Jingzhe, quickly escaped from the living room. Taking the steps two a time, he reached the third floor in no time and went into Mingzhu’s bedroom.
Just as Mei Mei had said, the little one was deep in slumber. He still moved closer to observe her closed eyes. He could not tell if she had cried and he did not want to wake her up. He whispered goodnight and backed out of the room, closing the door very carefully.
He returned downstairs and found Mei Mei and Mingzhe in the kitchen, sitting next to the counter and having a late dinner. It was not just them, all the Jun siblings were awake and eating.
Meow Meow was actively chirping by the window, from the window she would fly out to the frog carrier and visit Go Go Squid. She did not bother the dog and kittens but she definitely bothered Jingzhe. As soon as he sat down, she flew to his head and made herself comfortable there.
"This is one heavy bat." Jingzhe commented.
"She is pregnant." The triplets answered.
Meow Meow’s wings which were mid stretch to explain the cause of her heaviness paused. As much as she appreciated the help of the trio, she would have preferred to say it herself. Unhappy, she flew out of the kitchen and settled for touring the house.
"She is throwing a tantrum." Jun Yi explained, biting into a chicken thigh.
Jingzhe did not even want to ask how Jun Yi knew that. He wanted to know who had made his daughter cry.
"Mei Mei..." he started.
"Mingzhu threw a tantrum or had a meltdown." She told him. "She wanted to see you at dinner but you were still working and so she cried." With that very summarized explanation, she pushed a placed a plate of food in front of him.
Jingzhe retrieved his phone from his pocket, it had died Forty minutes ago. He had not charged it in three days. These newer long lasting phone batteries had a habit of running out at the worst possible times.
He grabbed Mei Mei’s hand, looking at her with eyes that carried a lot of guilt. "I am sorry, I should have returned sooner. I promise that I will always come home on time and...."
"Stop." She said to him. "You cannot make such a promise. Jingzhe, even I cannot make such a promise to her. There are days when I will have to work overnight and sleep at the camp and she will have to stay home. There are days when I might travel for one reason or the other and she will be left here at home or with relatives.
It is the same for you, there are times when you won’t be able to come home at night or walk her to the school bus in the morning. Mingzhu has some securities and we can make compromises to ease them and help her but I cannot chain you to her like a dog.
In the long run, she will just become too dependent on you that she won’t be able to go to the bathroom if you are not home. I am thinking about sending her to see a child psychologist.
She will eventually be alright. That is what I believe."
Jingzhe took one deep sigh. He realized that he was strong and she was right. Mingzhu had to be raised to be independent. He could indulge her to an extent but it could not be excessive or she would end up ruined in some ways.
"We will follow your direction." He nodded.
Jun Yi touched her chest and sighed. "Oh, he is such a good listener and a supportive boyfriend. Where can I find one like him?"
The sound of a slap had everyone turning their heads faster than her words. They were just in time to see Mingzhe retrieving his hand from the behind Jun Yi’s back.
Jun Yi was seething and rubbing the part of her back that had been slapped.
"Hey, Jun Mingzhe." Mei Mei shouted the name, rushing to Jun Yi’s side. Quickly, she drew her younger sister into a hug and rubbed her back for her. "Sorry, sorry."
"She is not dating until she is thirty." Mingzhe said.
Mei Mei did not know if it was the slap or those words said in a serious voice but something triggered Jun Yi to cry. "There , there, don’t cry. Men are bad anyway."
Meanwhile, in the midst of all this, a dog joined them, demanding to be fed. It was even clever enough to bring its food bowl. General Big Yellow could not believe that there was deep fried chicken and the rude humans had not invited him!!
