Chapter 180: Small Steps, Big Hearts ( 180 )
"Alright, Mr. Hazuki?" the clerk called out while flipping a form toward him.
Hazuki stepped forward.
"Yeah?"
"Please sign here. This confirms you’re taking responsibility as their guarantor."
"Where?"
"Just here at the bottom."
Hazuki took the pen, glanced over the document.
"Hmmm... so the elf girl’s name is Elvia, and the human kid is Chasia. Not bad. Good names."
As he signed, Ridan resting lazily on his shoulder peeked down at the form.
"Hmmm... looks legit. Nothing shady in the fine print. For once."
The clerk nodded with a smile.
"All done. Here are the temporary identity cards for the children."
Hazuki turned to the kids, holding out the neat stack of cards.
"Oi, all of you. Take one and wear it around your neck. Don’t lose it, got it?"
"Y-Yes, sir!" the children chorused, moving quickly to collect their cards with a mix of awe and nervousness.
The clerk smiled politely.
"Congratulations. That makes them temporary citizens of the Beastkin Kingdom, under your supervision."
Hazuki gave a satisfied nod.
"Good. And thank you, beautiful." He flashed his usual tired-but-charming smile.
The clerk giggled, ears twitching.
"My~ such a sweet talker."
Elvia fidgeted near the door, fingers curled around her new identity tag. Chasia still couldn’t look Hazuki in the face, eyes cast down as she mumbled softly,
"A-Are you... gonna be our papa now...?"
"Huh?" Hazuki blinked.
"What did you say?"
"N-Nothing!" Chasia shook her head quickly, her cheeks flushing as she grabbed Elvia’s hand and turned away.
Hazuki raised an eyebrow, but before he could say anything, he turned his sharp gaze to Kisha.
"You! Lady! Follow me!"
"Y-Yes?" Kisha froze on the spot, her heart racing.
This is it, she thought. He wants to claim me at the inn tonight...
"Let’s go."
"Umm... a-at least, can we send the children back to the house first?" Kisha asked nervously, wringing her hands.
"What for? They’re coming too," Hazuki replied without a second thought, already walking ahead.
Kisha’s heart stopped.
He’s bringing them along!?
H-He wants them to witness it!?
No, maybe... maybe he wants them to learn how to serve a man... oh God...
Meanwhile, Hazuki was thinking of something entirely different.
I’ll make sure she opens an account in the bank. That way, the money won’t get lost or taken by someone else.
And maybe I should ask if there’s a way to transfer funds to them monthly... or better yet, help them start some kind of small business. Bread stall in front of the house? Something simple but enough to keep them going.
He turned his head slightly, eyes narrowed.
"Oi! Hurry up!" Hazuki called out, waving them over.
"We still got a lot to do after this!"
Kisha flinched, her face pale, but she walked faster.
H-He’s so strict... so commanding...
W-We have more things to do?
I-Is it going to be multiple times in one night...?
She clenched her skirt and silently braced herself.
The kids followed along behind her, slightly more relaxed now that their new clothes no longer smelled like the market and Hazuki wasn’t shouting every second.
Hazuki didn’t notice Kisha’s expression—he was too busy mapping out what bank options he could ask about.
Ridan plopped lazily onto Hazuki’s head like a bird making itself comfortable in a nest, swaying as they walked through the busy town streets.
"Alright, let’s see... That one, eight out of ten," Ridan mumbled, eyes gleaming as he surveyed the passing women.
"Mmm, that one—four out of ten. Almost a chopping board. Ohh... but that one over there? Fweeeh! Ten outta ten for the jiggle!"
Hazuki sighed without slowing down.
"Do you ever shut up?"
"Nope."
Ridan leaned over like he was whispering a secret.
"So, score for this lady named Kisha?"
"I don’t know, man! I’m loyal to Ellyn—ahh, my beautiful Ellyn..." Hazuki’s eyes sparkled dreamily for a moment.
"Pedozuki..." Ridan said flatly.
"Oi! The adult one! The adult one!!" Hazuki barked, glaring upward.
"Alright, we’re here. Oi, lady! The money pouch." Hazuki held out his hand without turning.
"Umm... here..." Kisha handed it over hesitantly.
"Hah!? You go inside. And you all too! No standing around!"
"Y-yes, sir!!"
Once inside the bank, Hazuki barked,
"Alright, brats! Sit down and stay put! No wandering, no crying, no touching anything shiny!"
A well-dressed beastkin clerk looked up from the counter and gave a professional smile.
"Ah, welcome. What can I help you with today?"
"This lady here wants to open a bank account," Hazuki said, dragging Kisha forward like a lost sheep.
"Very well. May I see your ID?" the clerk asked.
Kisha, still flustered and confused, handed over her identity card. The clerk placed it on the glowing orb. A brief shimmer passed over it before he nodded.
"Account registration complete. How much will you be depositing?"
"Umm..." Kisha hesitated, unsure if she should say it out loud.
"All of it!" Hazuki snapped before she could finish.
"Give it to him now, lady brat!"
Kisha handed over the pouch with both hands, still unsure if she was doing the right thing.
The clerk opened it, and his eyes widened slightly.
"Oh my..."
Hazuki leaned a little closer, curious.
The clerk began counting with quiet murmurs, stacking coins on the glowing scale beside the orb.
"Seven gold coins... around eighty silver... and twenty copper."
Hazuki blinked.
"Tch... that damn crook actually had real money on him."
Ridan floated low, eyeing the stack.
"Told you. Those sleazebags always carry backup escape money. That’s why you loot first, ask questions never."
Kisha looked confused.
"I-Is it... too much?"
The clerk shook his head.
"Not at all, ma’am. I’ll deposit the full amount into your account."
"Thank you for opening an account with our bank," the clerk said with a bow.
Hazuki nodded once and turned on his heel.
"Let’s go."
The group stepped out into the busy street, sunlight spilling across the stone-paved road. Hazuki walked ahead as usual, hands in his pockets, side bag lightly tapping against his hip.
Behind him, the kids trailed quietly with Kisha in the middle of the group, their new clothes fluttering with each step.
The girls glanced at one another, then at Hazuki.
"That scary uncle is talking to himself again..." Elvia whispered to Chasia.
"I-I know... but I’m too scared to ask," Chasia replied, eyes wide.
The kids followed in a line, eyes wide and lips sealed. Each one of them quietly watched the serious, scary man who just spent so much money for them... talk to thin air again.
Hazuki muttered,
"Ridan, how much silver left?"
Ridan floated just above his shoulder, hidden to everyone else.
"About 30 silver, give or take. Enough for a good grocery haul."
"Good. Let’s go buy more food and stock up for these brats."
None of the kids dared speak. Even Elvia and Chasia just looked at each other and nodded silently as they followed.
Hazuki didn’t look back, but he called out loud enough,
"Alright. If I see anyone dragging their feet, I’m gonna make you carry all the sacks of flour yourself."
"Y-Yes sir!!" the group chorused in panic.
Ridan chuckled,
"You’re starting to sound like a drill instructor for orphans."
"Shut up," Hazuki grunted.
