Chapter 150: Food, Friends, and a Floating Mischief ( 150 )
The carriage rumbled to a slow stop at the town gates, joining a line of other carts and travelers waiting their turn to enter.
Hazuki sat up, stretching his arms overhead with a loud yawn.
"Emm... what’s this town called?" he asked, scratching his head.
The beastkin father, guiding the front reins, glanced back.
"This is Macia Town," he said politely.
"Still within the Beastkin Kingdom."
"Oh."
Hazuki nodded lazily.
He leaned over the side of the carriage, peering out.
Most of the people crowding the road were beastkin—but unlike Ellyn’s family, these ones were full-furred, their ears, tails, and even parts of their faces covered in various shades of thick fur. There were tiger beastkin, wolf beastkin, and even rabbit-eared ones walk lightly between merchant stalls.
Hazuki blinked, realizing again just how unique Ellyn—and her royal bloodline—really were compared to the common beastkin.
Floating lazily near Hazuki’s shoulder, Ridan spun a slow, lazy loop in the air.
"It’s gonna be night soon," he said, puffing a little smoke ring.
"You still got money, right?"
Hazuki patted the side pouch at his hip and nodded confidently.
"Yeah. Lucky Ellyn was a good girl. She didn’t spend my cash."
He smirked proudly, remembering his adventurer’s guild card tucked safely inside—carrying a balance of 16 gold, 55 silver, and 17 copper.
Ridan floated around him in slow, mocking circles.
"Yeah, yeah..." he drawled.
"But don’t forget, the loot you got from that tiger beastkin assassin guy? You spent every single coin inside..."
Hazuki puffed out his chest without shame.
"Of course!"
He jabbed a thumb at himself proudly.
"That’s future wife money! Catgirl wife fund! Real beauty deserves real investment!"
Ridan rolled his cloudy eyes.
"You’re beyond help, you know that?"
Hazuki just grinned like a fool, his eyes sparkling as he imagined Ellyn’s adult form again.
The line of travelers inched forward, the guards at the gate checking carriages one by one as the sun dipped lower behind the trees.
"Identity card!"
One of the beastkin guards shouted gruffly from the gate checkpoint, waving a paw-hand toward the line.
Hazuki hopped off the carriage with a small grunt, fishing into his side bag. He pulled out his adventurer card, the hard, metallic plate gleamed dully in the evening light.
Hazuki handed it over without a fuss.
The guard took it and placed it against a glowing crystal pedestal set up beside the checkpoint booth.
The crystal pulsed once—
then projected a simple floating screen showing Hazuki’s basic information in large letters:
Name: Hazekaya Hazuki
Age: 24
Race: Human
Status: No criminal record.
The guard scratched his furry chin, glancing at Hazuki suspiciously.
"Hmm... Hazekaya Hazuki, 24 years old, human without any criminal record... except..."
He squinted at the projection.
"Capture and detained in Briskle Town, huh?"
Hazuki threw up his hands defensively.
"Hey, I was innocent!"
The guard smirked, handing the card back.
"Yeah, yeah, we know. But a record is a record."
He shrugged casually.
"Alright, you’re good to go. Welcome to Macia Town. Don’t cause trouble."
Hazuki tucked the card back into his bag and waved lazily.
"No promises," he muttered under his breath.
Behind him, Ridan floated by, whistling the "Cops Are Watching" theme off-tune just to be annoying.
Hazuki ignored him as he hopped back onto the carriage, which slowly rolled through the gate and into the busy town beyond.
The smells of grilled meat, fresh bread, and roasted nuts drifted through the air.
The town pulsed with life—
but also, unseen beneath the laughter and lights, shadows stirred.
Waiting.
Watching.
Hazuki, of course, noticed none of it—
because his stomach immediately roared louder than his survival instincts.
"FOOD!!" he cried, pointing dramatically toward the nearest row of street vendors.
The moment the carriage rolled into a clear spot just inside the town walls, the beastkin father tugged the reins, bringing it to a gentle stop.
Before the wheels even fully settled,
THUMP!
Hazuki jumped off the back of the carriage, landing in a wide-legged stance like a hero arriving on the battlefield. He threw a thumbs-up at the stunned beastkin family.
"Alright, old man! Thanks for the ride!"
His voice boomed a little too loudly, drawing a few looks from passing townsfolk.
The beastkin man blinked, a bit overwhelmed, but managed a polite smile.
"Err... y-you’re welcome...?"
Inside the carriage, the little beastkin girl waved shyly at him.
Hazuki waved back with a big grin before spinning dramatically toward the lively streets of Macia Town.
Above him, Ridan floated in circles, his cloud body quivering with excitement.
Hazuki pumped his fist into the air.
"Alright, Ridan! Let’s get the food!!"
Ridan threw his tiny misty arms upward, shouting back,
"YEAHHHHHHHH!!"
Hazuki dashed toward the nearest food stall, practically drooling at the sight of grilled meat skewers sizzling over open flames.
The old beastkin vendor behind the counter looked up as Hazuki pointed excitedly at the skewers.
"This! How much?!"
The old vendor wiped his hands on a cloth and held up five fingers.
"5 copper coins each."
Hazuki froze.
"EHHHHH!! WHY SO EXPENSIVE!?"
He practically shouted, drawing a few glances from nearby customers.
The vendor just shrugged casually.
"Hmm? It’s normal price around here."
He tilted his head.
"Meat prices went up lately because of the monster hunts failing."
Hazuki’s mouth opened... then closed...
Then he slumped slightly in defeat.
"Oh..."
Ridan floated nearby, holding an imaginary sign that read, "POVERTY DETECTED," above Hazuki’s head.
Hazuki grumbled but pulled out a few battered copper coins from his side pouch.
"Well... give me two then!!" he barked stubbornly, as if he were still winning somehow.
The vendor chuckled and nodded.
"Alright, coming right up."
He expertly grabbed two of the juiciest skewers and handed them over, the aroma hitting Hazuki’s face like a heavenly slap.
Hazuki accepted them like sacred relics, his eyes practically sparkling.
Meanwhile, Ridan floated behind him, pretending to wipe fake tears.
"Look at this man... reduced to two sticks of meat... How the mighty have fallen..."
Hazuki ignored him, taking a huge bite.
"MMMGHH!! Worth it!!" he mumbled, eyes rolling back in joy.
As Hazuki tore into the first skewer with savage joy, Ridan floated closer, eyeing the meat like a hungry spirit. He extended a little misty hand and lightly touched the second skewer.
The moment his cloudy fingers made contact, it was like magic—despite having no solid body, Ridan chewed happily, tiny puffs of steam coming out from his misty mouth with every bite.
"Oh! This is good! Munch munch!"
Ridan floated in small, excited circles, chomping away like a kid discovering candy for the first time.
Hazuki glanced over, grinning lazily.
"Heh... glad you like it, partner."
Ridan gave a thumbs-up with his misty hand, still munching invisibly.
Passersby only saw Hazuki talking and smiling at seemingly nothing as he walked through the crowded streets, two skewers in hand, his mood soaring despite being a few copper coins poorer.
The smell of more food, baked bread, and spices filled the night air.
The town buzzed with life.
And Hazuki, with a full stomach in sight and his invisible buddy at his side, strolled into the unknown chaos of Macia Town.
