Chapter 121: The Clueless Human ( 121 )
"Ellyn."
"Um? Yes, Mother?" Ellyn blinked, turning toward Mrs. Faria, who had been silently following them a few steps behind. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
"We should head back home," Faria said gently. "I’m sure your "father" is worried, knowing you’ve been missing this long."
"But..." Ellyn hesitated, glancing back at Hazuki.
"No but. Now, Ellyn."
"Ugh! Fine..." she pouted, reluctantly sliding down from Hazuki’s shoulders with a soft thump.
She turned to face him, arms crossed behind her back. "Uncle?"
"Hm?" Hazuki replied, still chewing on the last bite of skewer meat.
"You’re staying here in town, right?"
"Huh? I don’t know. Maybe. Is there a stable around?"
Ellyn squinted. "Uncle..."
"What?"
"Why always a stable? Yumia Town... now here too? At least find a proper inn!"
"Err... inns cost money, you know. A stable’s cheaper. Just 1 copper coin for a dry corner and hay. Not too bad, really."
"NO CAN DO!!" she shouted, puffing her cheeks. "FIND. AN. INN!"
"Chill, girl! You act like we’re already married!"
"We are engaged!!" she huffed, pointing dramatically. "Pinky promise, remember!?"
Hazuki winced. "Ugh... right, right. Fine. I’ll try to find a cheap inn, okay?"
Still frowning, Ellyn turned toward Mrs. Faria, "Mother..."
Faria nodded knowingly. She understood. Ellyn might be returning to the castle, but her heart wasn’t leaving Hazuki behind.
Subtly, she gestured toward one of the guards in the distance. A clean-cut dog-eared man approached, bowing slightly.
Faria—ever graceful—returned a polite bow that immediately made the guard flinch with awkward panic. Her voice was warm yet commanding.
"Would you kindly help Mr. Hazuki find a "cheap" inn?"
The emphasis made the guard instantly understand.
"Yes, ma’am," he said crisply. "I will escort him to the "cheapest" inn in town."
Hazuki blinked. "Whoa, serious service. You sure it’s not too much trouble?"
"Not at all," Faria smiled. "We’re simply... grateful for what you’ve done."
Ellyn gave Hazuki one last worried look. "Uncle... stay safe, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. You too, brat. Don’t go vanishing again."
She smiled—but just before leaving, she turned and reached up her pinky finger one more time. "Don’t forget. Promise still stands."
Hazuki stared at her little hand for a moment... then linked his pinky with hers.
"...Yeah. I remember."
With that, Ellyn took Mrs. Faria’s hand, and the two slowly began to walk back toward the inner part of the town, where guards were already blending into the crowd, forming a quiet perimeter.
Hazuki scratched the back of his head.
"Man... what a day."
Ridan floated lazily beside him, spinning in slow circles like a bored balloon.
This guy... still doesn’t realize he’s casually flirting with royalty, Ridan thought, shaking his head.
He’s like a sheep wandering through a den of lions—and he’s too busy asking about inn prices to notice.
He sighed and bobbed upward with a lazy flip.
Hazuki stretched his arms. "Alright, let’s find this cheap inn."
The guard stepped forward. "This way, Mr. Hazuki."
As they walked down the stone-paved road, the market slowly returned to its usual rhythm—but hidden eyes continued to follow the boy who, unknowingly, had already become deeply entangled in royal affairs.
From the shadow of a rooftop, a black catfolk girl watched Hazuki and the beastkin guard escorting him through the plaza.
She was dressed in a sleek black outfit, her fur barely visible beneath her cloak—her eyes sharp and focused.
One of Junna’s shadow unit. A silent tracker, trained for observation and pursuit.
That’s him... she thought. The black-haired human who made the pinky promise with Princess Ellyna.
She moved silently across the edge of the rooftop, never taking her eyes off him. Hazuki was laughing about something again, likely with no clue he was being watched.
He’s completely unaware... She narrowed her eyes. Just like Miss Junna said. Foolish on the outside, but... something’s off about him.
She was about to reposition when suddenly—
A hand clamped down on her shoulder.
She froze.
"My, my~ Miss Black Catfolk," a calm, feminine voice said from behind her. "Where do you think you’re going?"
The catfolk girl stiffened.
She turned her head slightly and found herself face-to-face with one of the elite royal guards, operating under Mrs. Faria’s direct command.
"Err... umm..." the catfolk stammered, her cover already blown.
Before she could leap away or call for backup, two more elite knights appeared—one from her left, another from the opposite rooftop.
"You’re coming with us," the lead knight said firmly.
The girl barely resisted as they surrounded her. She knew better than to start a rooftop skirmish in the middle of town—not against Faria’s people.
With practiced efficiency, they whisked her away into the alleyways.
Mrs. Faria watched it unfold from a short distance, her eyes locking briefly with the knight who gave her a subtle nod—target secured.
She exhaled quietly, placing her hand on Ellyn’s hair as the princess walked beside her.
Hazuki, a few steps ahead, still had no idea.
Ridan floated beside him lazily, humming a tune only he could hear.
By the time they reached the inn, the sun was dipping low in the sky. Warm lantern light flickered from the windows, and the scent of roasted stew drifted out through the front door.
The guard accompanying Hazuki stepped forward, entering the modest but well-kept building ahead of him.
Hazuki hung back a few steps, stretching his arms. "Man... I can’t wait to lie on a real bed. Like... a real bed. With pillows. That aren’t made of hay."
Floating lazily beside him, Ridan grinned.
"Look who’s getting fancy now. Looks like someone’s gonna sleep in a real bed tonight~"
Hazuki snorted. "Hey, I don’t mind sleeping in the stable or even on the ground—as long as it’s quiet and comfy."
"You say that until you roll into a pile of dung."
The two continued their banter as the inn’s receptionist, an elderly beastkin woman with gray rabbit ears, bowed politely toward the guard after a brief, whispered conversation.
Hazuki didn’t catch any of it—he was too busy trying to pull a leaf out of his hair.
The guard turned and waved him over.
"Mr. Hazuki," he said with crisp formality, holding out a small bronze key. "Here is the key to your room."
"Oh?" Hazuki stepped up to take it. "How much do I owe? I think I’ve got..." He started counting his coppers awkwardly.
"There’s no need," the guard said with a small smile. "Ellyn’s mother already paid for everything in full."
"Huh? Wait, what? Why?" Hazuki blinked.
"It’s simply her way of expressing gratitude—for saving her daughter."
Hazuki scratched his head, feeling slightly awkward. "Oh... well... I mean, it’s not like I asked for anything. I just happened to be there, y’know..."
He glanced at the room key again, then grinned.
"Well—alright then! Ridan, let’s go see our room!"
With absolutely zero shame, Hazuki turned and strolled up the stairs, waving the key like a treasure.
The guard and the receptionist exchanged a brief glance, both watching the human cheerfully chatting with thin air.
The old rabbit-woman raised an eyebrow. "...Spirit user?"
"...Something like that," the guard replied.
They both watched as Hazuki disappeared around the corner, still talking to the empty air beside him.
