Chapter 97: Shugo’s Past

Arc 2, Chapter 97 — Shugo’s Past.

Leo’s words resounded through the darkened room that only had the frail hues from the moon providing illumination.

’I’m missing something, aren’t I...’

It would be a lie to say that Levon was taken aback by Leo’s inquiry.

When he met Shugo, he deduced that Shugo came from the famous Slyvantil family.

Shugo did in fact confirm this, also adding that he was the one to head into the mysterious training site just like his predecessor.

It seems the Slyvantil family sends people to the Order once or twice in every generation or so.

Shugo said that at that time, he only thought they were sent in to serve in some big military matter or some government issue that proved deadly.

One must understand that at that time, he hadn’t met any vampires yet and didn’t know what this place was all about.

Shugo said he was clueless of it all, and had only come because of his family’s orders.

However...is that truly the case? Just how well did he know this good buddy of his?

Of course, Levon is not that naive.

He had long sensed this guy was hiding something. But now that Leo brought it up, why not hammer it out of this guy?

Bhahahahahahaahah~

Shugo laughed with his hands raised in defeat, lookin at the duo wryly.

"Okay, you caught me." He spoke out. "It’s not that I was pushed out by my family... but I fought tooth and nail to win this chance to enter. However, what I said earlier is still TRUE."

As Shugo spoke, the shadows in the corners seemed to deepen, as if responding to the weight of his words.

Shugo continued: "Even though I wished to get in, I didn’t know what the mysterious organization was all about. Afterall, before coming here, who in their right minds will believe that vampires even exist?" freēwēbηovel.c૦m

That’s just rubbish!

You’d be lucky not to be beaten to a pulp for spreading such delusional thoughts around.

Leo and Levon nodded, agreeing that with how much security was in this place, it would be impossible for outsiders to know about this place, no matter how wealthy they are.

Leo also came from a wealthy family, so he understood this fact. Even with all the money, such news cannot be bought.

.

.

Well, that’s it. Leo’s tense eyebrows eased.

"Hey, bro, I didn’t mean to come off hard on you or pry into your secrets." Leo spoke softly. "It’s just that over time, I’ve just noticed you’ve had a lot on your mind."

Levon also nodded to this fact. From the moment Shugo received his shard till now, he had really never been the same Shugo Levon first met.

There seemed to be a mountain of pressure on his shoulders. They didn’t think it had anything to do with the upcoming competitions.

Shugo seemed to like training on his own, and just being withdrawn on various occasions. But why?

"So you did this to force him out of his worries?" Levon raised a brow thoughtfully.

"Yea," Leo shrugged. "This guy was becoming a volcano about to erupt. Shugo, maybe you don’t trust us yet... and quite frankly, it’s only right for you to be cautious in this place. But I’m telling you man, that if you bottle up everything without finding a way of release, it will do you more harm than good."

"I know." Shugo took in deep breaths. "So if you’re not sleepy, why don’t I tell you all a tale?"

A tale?

Levon and Leo gave each other tactful stares before chuckling softly. "Sure."

Shugo got plumped his pillow up and began a tale... except this tale was one with an unfinished ending.

"Once upon a time." Shugo began, with his voice a tinge of nostalgia, "there was a very happy and chubby boy."

Obviously, Leo and Levon knew the boy in question must be Shugo.

"A boy so full of joy, so brimming with innocence that the world itself looked brighter in his presence... But... even the brightest lights often cast shadows, don’t they?"

Shugo’s glassy eyes turned dull, his buried memories awakened. "To this boy, his brother, 10 years older than him, was his light. In a home where everything is pretentious and depended on abilities, his brother was his idol, his guiding star, and his salvation."

At this point of the story, Shugo’s eyes grew predatory, somewhat possessive.

"His brother was his everything to the boy. He was strong, kind, and brave. However, he had a flaw. He was annoyingly obedient to the clan."

Levon and Leo could hear Shugo’s tone shift slightly, a dark chuckle escaping his lips.

"Some might say it’s cowardly submission and others might say it’s a Noble act for the clan."

"One day, as fate would have it, this perfect older brother was chosen—no, plucked—from the comfort of their simple lives. Chosen to join some... mysterious organization."

"This mysterious organization cloaked in secrecy and whispers, was a place where no one dared volunteer but someone had to go."

"The clan sends members each year, and no one ever returns. So of course, it’s something no one ever volunteers for too."

"Thus, knowing they had an obedient lapdog in their midst, the clan shoved the older brother out... And so the brother went."

Even though Shugo’s voice was calm, they could sense the heaviness in his heart.

"Before he departed, both brothers made promises... Hah! Such sweet, naive promises!"

"... I’ll write to you, I’ll send letters.... the brother said. Words meant to soothe the little boy’s breaking heart."

"But you know what?" Shugo’s grin twisted into a sneer. "Those letters... they never came."

Levon could feel it, Shugo’s pain. But Shugo wasn’t done with his Tale.

"And so the boy waited... Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. Each passing moment chipped away at that joy—at that innocence—until all that remained was a hollow shell of what once was."

"So what did the boy do? He decided to head into this mysterious organization, to find out the truth of what happened to his beloved brother for himself."

"He trained in all possible ways, preparing for the day to come... And what a surprise he received when finding that there might be hope for his long lost brother’s survival."

"After all, if his brother came here, then... he should be a Bloodren somewhere out there, right?"
