Chapter 24: Chapter 24

One by one, all the exits closed, causing the people inside the gallery to panic even more. Thankfully, even a standard Rank 4 monster, while formidable, couldn’t breach the reinforced barriers blocking the exits.

"This is better than stopping the civilians one by one and repeatedly warning them," Cypher muttered, though only Angela could hear him.

With that, she cleared her throat and addressed the panicked citizens. "Everyone! Stay calm! Stay still! It’s safer here inside. We’re Heroes — well, not officially yet, but we’re here to help. We’re ready to handle this."

"Hey, you should stop-" Cypher began, but Angela held up a hand, silencing him.

"Shut it. Don’t just stand there, grab a weapon too," Angela said, her voice echoing through the gallery.

"What? Why should I?" Cypher asked, confused.

"Don’t be a baby and just grab a weapon! Look over there!" Angela said, pointing to a group of civilians huddled together.

Angela created her mana-infused arrow, aiming it at a man in the center of the group. She glanced at Cypher, her eyes conveying a silent command.

Before Cypher could protest, Angela fired. The arrow, imbued with her aura, pierced the man’s throat. Immediately, he froze, eyes wide and unfocused. He appeared dazed, utterly shocked by Angela’s sudden action.

"Have you finally lost your mind, Angela?!" Cypher roared, his voice laced with disbelief and outrage.

"Sshh! Will you look for a little longer!" Angela hissed, her eyes fixed on the man.

Any normal person would have died from such a wound. But the man, instead of collapsing, grabbed the arrow protruding from his neck and yanked it free. Purple blood spurted, staining his clothes. A swirling, foggy black magic rose from his hand, consuming the arrow as it vanished.

Clomp. Clomp. Clomp.

The man whirled around, his eyes blazing crimson, hostility radiating from him. A low growl rumbled in his throat.

"..."

Without a doubt, he was a Rogue.

Cypher’s face drained of color. He obeyed Angela’s unspoken order, shattering the display case holding the Frostbite Serpentfang Sword replica. Though a replica, the advanced technology and engineering made it nearly indistinguishable from the real weapon. It should be powerful enough to neutralize a Rogue of this caliber.

"Ohh... Nice choice of weapon. I heard that it freezes the enemy and has the deadliest venom—even a minor wound from that sword is fatal," Angela approached, a smirk playing on her lips, and stood beside Cypher.

Meanwhile, I remained on the sidelines, observing the main characters. Eventually, I tore a section of my dress, ensuring easy access to my daggers. I considered joining them, but after a moment of deliberation, I took three steps backward.

’I’m still not strong enough. If I drew too much attention and the Rogue targeted me, that would be the end of it.’

A familiar blue aura enveloped the Frostbite Serpentfang Sword. The pure, vibrant blue mana illuminated the sword’s blade.

Angela’s gaze lingered on the sword for a moment before she turned to Cypher. "You ready?" she asked. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"Yeah," Cypher replied, his grip tightening on the weapon.

I continued to slowly retreat. There was nothing I could contribute in this situation. In the novel, Cypher was about to unleash his hidden power and effortlessly dispatch this Rogue. Concurrently, Angela, awestruck by Cypher’s display of strength, would abandon her rivalry and begin to admire him as a man.

Adjusting his grip on the sword, Cypher issued an instruction. "Support me."

"Support? Oh please, I’ll be the one killing him," Angela retorted playfully, not missing a beat as she nocked another aura-infused arrow.

Swoosh!

Before she could release the arrow, the Rogue unleashed his magic. A surge of purple aura, like hellfire, hurtled towards them. However, before it reached their position, a single streak of light materialized, annihilating the fiery wave. It seemed Cypher was already utilizing his gift. His unique sword gift allowed him to cleave through any element, including any aura and magic powers.

Angela’s arrow then zipped through the air, finding its mark near the Rogue’s heart. The arrow, imbued with condensed mana, pierced his flesh.

Cypher seized the opportunity. Leaping forward, he brought the Frostbite Serpentfang Sword down in a diagonal slash.

This attack should have frozen the Rogue solid, immobilizing him, and the venom should have taken effect.

But despite the gash in his flesh, despite being frozen and poisoned, the Rogue merely smirked. A chill of unease snaked down Cypher’s spine.

He attempted to withdraw the sword embedded in the Rogue’s body, but it was firmly lodged. Suddenly, a multitude of sharp thorns sprouted from the Rogue’s arms, launching hundreds of them directly at Cypher.

As if caught in a violent storm, he was flung backward by the relentless barrage of thorns, each one inflicting another wound. He didn’t even have time to cry out. He hurtled across the museum and was finally pinned to the wall.

"Ooof!"

"..."

"..."

Angela and I stood in stunned silence.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! My protagonist, my main character, coughed up blood! Something was drastically off. Why was this Rogue so incredibly powerful?! At this specific point in the novel, Cypher was supposed to unleash his hidden power and dominate the fight. Something was definitely wrong with the script.

I rushed over to where Cypher was pinned. Thankfully, he seemed relatively okay, and I quickly helped him remove the embedded thorns. He needed a moment to recover from the minor injuries. Meanwhile, the Rogue was advancing towards Angela, whose face had gone pale and rigid with fear.

Angela fired three arrows in rapid succession. But none of them seemed to have any effect. She continued to loose arrow after arrow until the Rogue resembled a porcupine, but even that didn’t deter him from closing the distance between them.

"How is this possible? Rogues don’t have regeneration skills..." I mumbled to myself, watching the fight unfold.

Of course, this type of Rogue wasn’t supposed to have high regeneration. Instead, he was designed with a sturdy physique, that was it. In the first place, I had never intended for him to be this strong, and certainly not for Angela to be the one trying to defeat him. This specific Rogue was meant to be a stepping stone for Cypher, a challenge he had to overcome to awaken his hidden power.

"Angela! Focus and support me!" Cypher suddenly yelled.

In that instant, Cypher leaped in front of her, blocking the Rogue’s path. However, the Rogue’s gaze remained fixed solely on Angela. His left arm began to contort and mutate, producing a grotesque, serpent-like creature. This creature bared its fangs and lunged towards Cypher. Simultaneously, the Rogue’s right arm extended with terrifying speed, and he fiercely grabbed Angela’s face.

"Aack!"

"Guuk!"

Angela and Cypher both cried out, their voices a mix of fear, pain, and desperation.

’Shit! Shit! Shit!’ I was now screaming internally, frantically trying to figure out a way to save them. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen!

"Macaron? Macaron! I need you right now!" My voice was trembling as I kept darting my eyes between the two struggling against the Rogue.

In an instant, Macaron materialized in front of me. "Master?"

"Open system settings now!"

Macaron swiftly brought up my system window, and I immediately navigated to my attributes. With trembling fingers, I began to write down my final ability.
