Chapter 1302: Chapter 1302: I Just Want to Be with You

After the meeting, Mu Lei and a few subordinates were bantering on the city wall. "Captain, do you think that Hungry Wolf is really that powerful?"

"Haven’t you met him before? Back then, he even saved your life."

A melodious flute sound wafted from the top of the arrow tower behind Mu Lei. A woman in simple clothing stood atop the tower. Holding a bamboo flute, her lips opened and closed ever so slightly, sending the boundless beauty of the melody drifting away with the wind.

This woman was none other than Xie Xinying, the Third Alliance Leader of the Iron Gale Cavalry and a Level 35 Taoist Priest.

"You’re talking about that kid who picked up random blades and hacked aimlessly?"

"Yes, that’s him. Although his appearance has changed, the aura he carries remains the same. I’m sure Hungry Wolf is him."

Upon hearing Mu Lei’s words, Xie Xinying’s flute shifted from its mournful tone to a faint joy. Yet, in the entire alliance, no one could truly understand her melodies or become her soulmate.

You didn’t return to the original place. Instead, you rested atop a small dirt mound.

"White Shadow, come over here." You called White Shadow away from Hongyan. "Listen carefully to everything I’m telling you now, understood?"

"Woo." White Shadow seemed to sense something.

"You are the King of the Prairie, the lord of this land. What happened today, you saw it yourself. Humans may come to hunt you and your kind at any time. You must grow stronger. I’ve taught you everything I can. The rest of the journey, you’ll have to navigate on your own."

"Woo!" White Shadow leapt into your arms, licking you fervently with its tongue.

"I’m just a human. Despite the deep bond between us, we belong to different races. I still have to leave—I have my own path to walk. You’ve always been strong. No, you’re no longer a child. You’re the King of the Prairie now. You’ve come of age. Now! Show some dignity befitting the Wolf King!"

White Shadow slowly backed away, staring at you intently, then finally nodded heavily.

"Go find your own path. We’ll meet again one day. Go on, and when we meet again, I hope you’ll have become a brave king." White Shadow howled a few more times. Turning its head to glance at Hongyan, it then let out a long cry and bolted deep into the prairie.

After White Shadow left, you let out a sorrowful sigh.

Slowly standing, you looked at Hongyan. "Let’s head to White Hat Town while it’s still light out. You’ll be safe there."

"Wait, what do you mean by that? Are you trying to get rid of me too?" Hongyan suddenly stood up.

"I have many things I still need to do."

"You think I’m a burden?" Tears welled up in Hongyan’s eyes.

You said nothing, instead turning your head to the side.

"Why? Why are you doing this to me? If you hate me so much, why didn’t you just let me die? Why did you save me?"

Tears filled her eyes as her heart was shattered once again by you. "I saved you as an act of help between friends. I hold no other feelings toward you."

Hongyan pleaded, her voice trembling. "Can’t you at least try to accept me?"

"I’m sorry. I don’t have the time."

Your coldness froze her heart completely.

She turned and ran off, heedless of the steep slope she was on. Unintentionally, her foot caught on a stone, and she tumbled downward.

"Careful!"

As she fell, you threw your body beneath hers, landing on your back to cushion her. Like a human sled, you slid down the slope. Fortunately, there weren’t many rocks, so you weren’t greatly injured, though your back burned with pain.

"Are you alright?"

Seeing your tense expression, Hongyan tried to get up, but you held her tightly. Smiling gently—something she’d never seen from you before—you said, "I just don’t want you risking your life with me. The places I’m going are filled with danger."

"I don’t care. Just being with you is enough for me."

See that?

That’s the essence of winning someone’s heart!

Staring into each other’s eyes, your gaze brimmed with affection. "That day, the person riding the bicycle—was it you?"

Hongyan nodded faintly. "I originally just wanted to look up your information, but instead I was..."

Their lips slowly pressed together. At that moment, all distance between the two disappeared...

You continued holding Hongyan as you lay on the grass. The pain in your back was something you were long accustomed to. You’d once stargazed and sung folk songs on the prairie even with far worse injuries, so this was nothing.

White Hat Town was one of the major northern towns and served as a key transportation hub between the north and the south. The Kiran Empire’s elite Third Legion, the Purple Rhinoceros Legion, was stationed here.

Two days prior, the gray wolves on the prairie had launched a collective riot, leaving the commander of the Purple Rhinoceros Legion greatly perplexed. He dared not act carelessly, bolstering the guards and dispatching a scout team to investigate. Yet, two days had passed and the scout team had not returned.

"Damn it!" Since taking command of the Purple Rhino Legion, Jett had never encountered someone like Hungry Wolf. To date, no one alive had seen Hungry Wolf. He didn’t even know if Hungry Wolf was a player or an NPC.

"Report!" A soldier shouted from outside the door.

"What is it?"

"Commander, a player is requesting to see you. He claims to have brought something you’ve been wanting."

"Let him in."

"Yes, sir!"

Soon, you entered Jett’s office carrying a bundle. Smiling, you nodded toward him. "It’s an honor to meet you, distinguished commander."

"What’s in your hand?"

"Something you’ve been wanting." You placed the bundle on Jett’s desk. "You’ll know once you open it."

Early in the game, NPCs were far stronger than players, and Jett was among the most powerful NPCs. Naturally, he wasn’t worried about traps. When he opened the bundle, his eyes fell on a blood-stained armor and a white wolf pelt.

"This is..."

"This is Hungry Wolf’s armor and the Wolf King’s pelt," you said with a smile. "And, of course, his blade, though it’s now mine."

"You’re saying you killed Hungry Wolf?"

"Yes." You nodded. "I’m here today to claim the bounty from you."

"Hungry Wolf is really dead?"

"The armor is proof. Surely you don’t think I’d conspire with Hungry Wolf to cheat you out of your money?" You still wore that confident smile. "Besides, I can promise you that from now on, the prairie will return to peace. The wolves will no longer act in large groups—they’ll return to hunting under their Wolf King."

Jett pondered for a moment before speaking. "Name your price."

"One million gold coins."

Jett sneered coldly. "Is this extortion? You have the audacity to extort one of the Empire’s three major legion commanders?"
