Chapter 19: Deserving of Death
—————————
Before being ushered into the principal's office, Akatani Yota had a moment of relief. Glancing at Aida Daichi beside him, his earlier unease hardened into bravado.
With a sneer, he whispered, "Daichi, you're done for! I never thought you'd have the guts to kill both Yuto and Ryosuke. What, you think this is some TV drama? Killing people and strolling into school like nothing happened? Even if you used that curse doll to send them to hell, you're still a murderer by proxy!"
"Why are you so nervous?" Aida Daichi replied calmly. "Even if I get caught, there's no death penalty here. I'll get out eventually. You throwing threats now—you looking to die?"
That shut Yota up, fear silencing him.
So when they entered, Aoji saw a quiet Aida Daichi and a visibly shaken Akatani Yota.
His gaze swept over them, lingering on Aida Daichi with a slight frown.
He spotted it—a thick, swirling black mist coiling around Aida's chest.
"A curse?" Aoji mused. So, calling on Hell Girl came with a price. He just didn't know what it was.
He furrowed his brow, hoping this curse hit everyone who met Hell Girl—not just those who pulled the string.
Otherwise, it'd mean Aida Daichi had already yanked it.
Before he could speak, Yota, unable to bear the room's heavy silence, blurted out, "Officer, it's this guy next to me! Two days ago, he had a curse doll—just like the one in that 2ch video, exact same! Yuto and Ryosuke—he definitely killed them!"
The moment he finished, the odd officer's icy stare pinned him. Instantly, Yota felt frozen, his thoughts grinding to a halt.
A second later, he was drenched in cold sweat, gasping for air.
Aida Daichi watched, heart tightening. As an ordinary kid, meeting Hell Girl had shown him the world wasn't as simple as it seemed.
If that urban legend was real, there had to be more supernatural stuff out there.
"Principal Komori, you all step out. I need to question Aida alone," Aoji said, issuing a dismissal. The curse on Aida's chest made him cautious—he wasn't heartless enough to let civilians linger near danger.
"Uh... alright," Principal Komori relented. A murder at school, if leaked, would tank Aoshiro High's reputation—who'd enroll after that?
He'd hoped to chat up the officer, build some rapport.
But Yota's freak-out just now felt off. With a sour face, he led the teacher and Yota out.
Once they were gone, Aoji fixed his gaze on Aida Daichi. "You've met Hell Girl. Tell me every detail—now," he ordered, his tone turning cold. "Don't try to hide or play dumb. If I'm asking, I already know."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Aida Daichi gritted out.
"Koike Oto, strip his shirt," Aoji said flatly, eyeing his assistant. "There's a curse on his chest—be careful."
Koike paled, recalling Aoji's earlier words.
Assistants were there to take the fall when it counted.
She hadn't expected it so soon. Steeling herself, she stepped forward—no refusing now.
High pay came with high stakes. It was her duty.
"No need," Aida Daichi cut in. If this guy knew about the curse, he was no ordinary cop.
Head down, he admitted, "Yuto's my kill. But Ryosuke—I don't know what happened to him."
Saying it aloud, the weight of the past two days lifted slightly. He was just a regular kid—killing someone had crushed him.
But... prison? What would his mom do?
His eyes dimmed with sorrow.
"I already know you killed him," Aoji said coolly. "You still have that straw doll, right?"
Aida Daichi frowned, puzzled. "I used the curse doll to kill Yuto."
Normally, Aoji would've slapped him for that. But with an unknown curse in play—contagious or not—he wasn't touching Aida.
Suppressing his irritation, his squinted eyes glinted coldly.
He said nothing more, just opened the window and pointed at Shinshin Lake. "Remember that spot? Don't bother denying it—that's where you killed Iwakuro Yuto, right? Keep lying if you want, but I'll have the MPD check it out, and it'll all come clear."
Aida Daichi's face drained of color.
"Plus... when others pull the string, victims drop dead instantly—brain death. Why's Iwakuro Yuto just 'missing'? No need to hide a body after a sudden death," Aoji continued calmly. "So, you killed him yourself. Two days ago, it rained—perfect cover."
Aoji had come here because Yota's tip mentioned Aida's curse doll and the disappearances of Yuto and Ryosuke.
Hell Girl's victims died on the spot when the string was pulled—no cleanup needed.
He'd targeted Aoshiro High for that doll. Why else bother with Aida specifically when he could've questioned anyone closer?
Aida Daichi stayed silent. After what felt like forever, he spoke slowly. "Actually... the name I entered in Hell Correspondence wasn't Yuto. It was Taniya Masaki."
Taniya Masaki?
Aoji hadn't heard it before.
Koike flipped through her notes, eyes lighting up. "Taniya Masaki—CEO of Shinga Firm. Died suddenly at his office two days ago. MPD suspects a business rival used Hell Girl for revenge."
"Why'd you kill him?" Aoji's face darkened. If this was true, the doll was gone.
Aida Daichi kept his head down, silent.
Koike called the MPD, soon getting detailed files.
Reading them, she grimaced. "Sir, Taniya Masaki was Aida's stepfather..." Her expression soured as she handed the file over.
A quick scan, and Aoji snorted. "Deserving of death."
