Chapter 22: 022 Shadow_1
Casio has money, but not much. Most of these large, yellowish federal bills were pilfered from that antique commissioner named William. It has to be said, this indeed solved some of his urgent financial issues – meal expenses, accommodation, transportation…
He was busy from morning to afternoon. Finally, he checked into a secluded inn where they did not ask for identification.
Standing by a second-floor window, Casio glanced down at the wet street below. There were two or three men wearing cheap shirts, chatting and joking around under their umbrellas.
As for the wide street on the left, he could faintly discern female students wearing crisp white dresses. Holding up the long hem of their lace skirts, they walked with little steps, their white uniformed legs wrapped in recently popular silk stockings attracting attention.

Moss piled up in the corners, while ivy covered in dew decorated the wall, only occupying a small section.
Feeling the cool breeze on his face, Casio bit into the sandwich in his hand. Only now could he consider it as having lunch, despite the fact that it was almost dusk.
The entire afternoon was spent arranging his false identity, a brown paper booklet. In this era, getting a false identity wasn’t particularly difficult. Especially if you were willing to pay without hesitation, it could be drafted by evening.
Every city has people who specialize in such work.
After eating his sandwich in two bites, Casio glanced at the brown wooden box on the bed which contained some living supplies he had bought.
He had to stay at this inn for the night and could only use his false identity to buy a train ticket to Baichuan City tomorrow. It’s more than six hundred kilometers away from Fengnan City, almost covering two-thirds of North Flow Country, the train journey would take a day and a half.
Casio had visited Baichuan City on a trip once, during an event held by Zexi University. He had stayed there for more than two weeks so he was familiar with the city.
Anyway, leaving Fengnan City was the priority.
Walking to the bedside to pour himself a glass of water, Casio glanced at the second-hand watch on his wrist – it was 5:21.
Nine more minutes until 5:30, almost time.
He walked to the coat rack and casually donned his black coat and hat. Just as he was about to leave, he picked up an umbrella. Once he was ready, he made his way downstairs.
At the front desk of the inn, a balding old man was dozing off.
Casio took a look and walked out under his umbrella.
The rain wasn’t heavy outside, but it was like wet silver gray spider webs, and the sky was gloomy like old peeling roof tiles. The atmosphere was inexplicably irritable and oppressive.
The rain was almost silent as it fell onto his umbrella. Casio followed the street and made four or five turns. Eventually, he stopped in a secluded alley. There was already a man waiting for him with an umbrella.
“You’re here?” The man slightly lifted the edge of his umbrella. Behind the thick glasses on his nose was a face full of stubble.
“I’m here, do you have the stuff?” Casio was straightforward.
“I do, where’s the money?” The man slipped his hand into his pocket and quickly pulled out a brown booklet, a freshly made false identity.
“This is the rest of it.” Casio pulled out several large bills from his pocket and the two men quickly exchanged items.
“Check it out, does it meet your requirements?” The stubbled man flicked the banknote, scrutinizing the anti-counterfeiting proof.
A few minutes later, Casio nodded with satisfaction.
“Pleasure doing business.”
“Pleasure doing business.”
The two men shook hands and then parted ways.
As expected, professionals do work quickly. While walking down the alley, Casio pulled out his fake identity from his pocket. The cover was a brownish plastic, prominently displaying several characters. Inside were five yellow sturdy pages.
It faintly gave off a fresh ink scent.
The first page bore a familiar name: Li Wei.
Casio placed the certificate back into his pocket. As his path was blocked by a puddle, he moved to the sidewalk. The streetlight on his right side was already on, casting its warm yellow light.
There weren’t many pedestrians on the street. Only the wet stray cats hiding under the eaves periodically cried out, their bodies trembling.
“It’s so quiet.”
Casio’s previously heavy mood lifted slightly.
Unbeknown to him, at some point, the shadows projected on the left wall began to subtly contort. The black vortex was like a multitude of blinking eyes.
An eerie air of horror gradually filled the scene.
The shadow that was moving in sync with Casio’s steps started to falter as though it couldn’t keep pace with him. As if, after being walked around a corner where there was no streetlight, Casio’s shadow disappeared.
It was replaced by the silhouette of a man following him.
The figure raised his head, identical to Casio – even the clothes and umbrella were the same.
The shadow was alive! It was a duplicate of Casio!
Under the gloomy sky, on the dim pavement, two identically dressed shadows walked with the same rhythm.
Not even the glow from the streetlights could reveal their own shadows.
Suddenly, the figure behind trembled, as if it broke loose from the mimicry of the original body, and charged forward. His facial expression looked fierce, just like an evil spirit.
“!” Not until that moment did Casio notice someone was rushing from behind. With an explosive technique, he rapidly turned around and threw a punch.
Thud!
The punch landed on the face of the shadow. Facial muscles rippling, his teeth cracked under the pressure. A gush of mixed saliva and blood spurting out of his mouth, it also includes three or four broken teeth.
The shadow was sent flying by the punch, grunting as it landed in a puddle, splashing water everywhere.
“Ah!!!” It groaned in pain on the ground. “How can you be so much stronger!? We are supposed to be the same!”
“What?” Casio dropped his umbrella and headed straight towards him.
He grabbed the person on the ground and hoisted him up.
The two stood erect, face-to-face.
“Impossible!!!” They both voiced their disbelief at the same time.
Casio’s heart sank. The person standing in front of him was identical to himself – in features, demeanor, even body type!
On the other hand, the shadow was also shocked.
Because he noticed a severe issue! The original host was half a head taller than him. His body was also much bigger, and the trapezius muscle beside the neck was particularly distinct.
His overall shape suggested a firm body under the shirt which was consistent with a regular gym-goer.
“Did I not duplicate properly?!”
The downsized copy swallowed the blood in his mouth and involuntarily took a few steps back under Casio’s gaze.
