Chapter 61: Dr. David

On Cecilia’s phone screen was a photo of her beaming while holding Emma, though Emma was only showing her back as she had her face buried in Cecilia’s neck.

This picture was taken just after they returned to the country. At that moment, the usually fearless Emma had seen a German Shepherd that was taller than her by half a head, scaring her so much that she had burrowed into Cecilia’s arms. Edwin had captured this moment.

Cecilia found it adorable and set it as her wallpaper.

However, she momentarily forgot that Steven was beside her.

He stared at the screen. The little girl’s back seemed to be more and more familiar to him as if he had seen her recently...

He asked curiously, "Miss Morrison, is this your daughter? Do you have a photo of her face?"

Only then did Cecilia realize that Steven was staring at her phone screen. She quickly turned off her phone and replied lightly.

"Yes, I do."

Half a minute passed.

‘I do, and then what?’

Seeing as Cecilia had no intention of showing him the photo, Steven only coughed awkwardly.

Being the sharp person she was, she definitely knew he wanted to see the photo. However, since she answered but did not do anything, it was enough to indicate she didn’t want to show him.

Steven understood but still wanted to make an effort.

"Can I see the photo of your daughter?"

...

Cecilia couldn’t believe that someone could be so insensitive. Aside from her thoughts, she casually brushed his request off with an excuse.

"Sure—next time."

Zane overheard and almost burst into laughter.

Was this really Steven? In all his years serving him, he had never seen anyone repeatedly refuse Steven and leave him in such an awkward position. Cecilia certainly had talent.

Steven shot a cold glance at Zane, who immediately put away his playful expression.

On the other hand, Cecilia had no plans on dealing with Steven’s questions any further. Upon seeing Elena and James, she got up and walked toward them.

Steven was a bit puzzled. He was just asking for a photo; why was she avoiding it so much?

From what he knew about her, she definitely came across as an open, independent person.

The more she hid this from him, the more it proved that her daughter was no ordinary child.

Thinking of this, Steven turned to Zane and said, "Investigate her daughter. The more detailed, the better."

He wanted to see what secrets Cecilia was hiding.

Just as Cecilia reached Elena and James, she overheard Mr. Warner mocking them.

"How did you get in? If people knew I was hosting an event with leeches like you here, where would I put my face? Hurry up and leave through the back door!"

His words seemed like he was concerned for the event’s reputation since the Mitchells were here, but his expression was one of pure delight. It was as if he wanted everyone around to hear his “authoritative” speech.

James’ face turned red, but he didn’t retort because they still needed Warner’s help.

"Mr. Warner, you can say whatever about me; I don’t mind. We’re in the construction industry together, and we came today to ask for your assistance..."

Before he could finish, Mr. Warner spoke up louder and interrupted him.

"Ask for my help? The famous Mr. Mitchell of the Mitchell family is asking me for help? Go on, let’s see what kind of assistance you think I would be able to provide to you, Mr. Mitchell."

This indeed drew the attention of many attendees.

James didn’t mind; compared to the workers’ health and the company’s safety, these were only minor issues.

"We heard a world-renowned pulmonology expert named Dr. David is here at today’s event. Could you introduce us..."

"Dr. David? I know him well, and of course, I can introduce you."

At this, James and Elena looked delighted.

To their surprise, Warner quickly changed his tone.

"But..."

He squinted and looked at James, with his graying hair, up and down.

"Dr. David’s consultation fee starts at thirty million. If you can’t come up with that, there’s nothing I can do for you."

James and Elena glanced at each other and said nothing further.

They indeed couldn’t come up with thirty million at the moment. Due to public opinion, several partners had ended collaborations and shifted to Warner. The company was also facing material inventory issues.

Although their prices were already slashed to the lowest, nobody wanted to take over the Mitchell family’s materials, resulting in a cash flow crisis.

Forget thirty million—-even three million would be difficult for them to accumulate right now.

Warner rolled his eyes and continued.

"How about selling your company to me for thirty million? I’ll reluctantly take it, and then you will have the money to pay Dr. David."

Elena’s eyes widened.

"Absolutely not!"

Aside from the company being something the older couple had worked their whole lives for, the thirty million price was essentially giving it away for free, which was unacceptable!

James frowned. He knew Warner was cunning, but he didn’t expect him to be this conniving. Warner had once worked under James when he was younger; one could say James was the one who had brought him into the industry.

"Mr. Warner, we really can’t sell you the company. Please introduce us to Dr. David first, and I will find a way to raise the money, okay?"

Warner saw their persistence and reluctantly agreed. Either way, he thought that they would not be able to get through this crisis, so their company would still eventually fall into his hands.

"Sure, but if you want a favor, show me the right attitude. Kneel down, and I’ll introduce you."

Hearing this, Cecilia walked over to Elena, unable to tolerate any more. She swiftly kicked Warner on his back, causing him to fall flat on his face.

The crowd gasped, then burst into laughter.

Struggling to get back up, Warner’s face turned as red as a pig’s liver.

He fumed, "You all! This is outrageous! I kindly offered to introduce you, and yet one of you dared to kick me!"

James and Elena didn’t want to endure it anymore. This was mainly because Cecilia had stepped in. They feared what harm Warner would do to her in the future, given his sinister nature.

"We don’t need your introduction anymore, and don’t bother thinking about the company. We will just figure it out ourselves."

Warner yelled, "I would not even want that worthless company of yours, even if you offered it for free! I’ve already put the word out—no one in the entire city will use your goods. Let’s see how long you can last!"

James and Elena were furious. As expected, it was his doing again!

As they were about to argue, a stern voice suddenly rang out.

"Who says no one will use their goods?!"
