Genesis Code: The Genetic Awakening-Chapter 59: Complications
Chapter 59: Complications
BOOM...!!!
A large fireball struck a horde of monsters, incinerating those directly hit while the flaming shockwaves blasted the rest, leaving them to burn to death.
Yet the monsters kept coming. They were as relentless as they were numerous. Their eyes glowed a menacing red, their bloodlust palpable.
"Keep firing, don’t let up!" Captain Reeder, knight of the Luntheria Kingdom, shouted at the top of his lungs. "Close combatants, move in while the monsters are disoriented!"
The air was thick with the scent of blood, mingled with the sweat and tears of the knights. They had been fighting in this dungeon for hours now.
And from the looks of things, there seemed to be no end in sight to these monsters. Unlike the usual creatures they faced in dungeons, this one was different.
The monsters here were more bloodthirsty than usual and refused to stay on their assigned floors.
And the reason for all this was a demon that had infiltrated the dungeon, doing something unnatural to the creatures.
For weeks, the kingdom’s forces had tried to reach the final floor to deal with the demon, but the relentless waves of monsters wouldn’t let up.
The demon had done something to the dungeon—a Tier 5 dungeon, no less. The chaos it unleashed had the kingdom’s rulers on edge.
The kingdom couldn’t spare too many men here, as they had to safeguard the borders and shores against demons seeking to break into the mainland.
BOOM...!!!
Another explosion from the firing squad brought the wave to an end as knights and mages collapsed to the ground, too exhausted to do anything else.
"Captain, this can’t go on for long," Kennedy, his second-in-command, said. "We need reinforcements as soon as possible. We’re close, but if we don’t move forward soon, this will all be a waste."
"I know, Ken." Captain Reeder sighed, gazing at his exhausted men. "The kingdom is already putting together a team to help us clear this nightmare. It should be any day now."
The captain and his men hated this place so much that they wished they could destroy it completely. And the reason was that they couldn’t use any of the monster cores left behind.
Thousands of monsters had fallen to their might over the weeks, yet none of the cores the creatures left behind were useful. They had all been tainted with demonic energy.
While they received their supplies on time, it felt like a waste to do all this work without gaining anything from the dungeon.
Unfortunately, if they ignored it, they’d have a dungeon break on their hands—something they couldn’t afford.
’I hope I don’t lose any more men before the adventurers get here,’ the captain prayed. ’May the goddess be with us all...’
Captain Reeder turned and headed to his tent. Time was of the essence here. Every bit they had was used wisely.
......
Crownlands, Lunaris.
The tournament had been going on for a few days and was approaching its end.
Fortunately for the kingdom, they had managed to select a decent number of powerful adventurers—numbering in the hundreds—while also generating significant revenue.
Inside the Royal Castle, King Gray sat in his office, handling paperwork to finalize preparations for the mission at hand.
"Your Majesty."
A male voice, belonging to his personal guard and one of his knight commanders, reached him. "We just received a letter from the front lines."
The king furrowed his brows and looked toward the door. He dreaded receiving news from the front lines, as it usually meant something was going wrong.
"Bring it to me," King Gray said, leaning back in his chair with a heavy sigh. ’This is the worst. Now I have to deal with multiple problems at the same time.’
The commander, keenly aware of his king’s thoughts, could only sigh inwardly as he stepped forward to deliver the letter.
"Thank you," King Gray said as he tore off the seal to reveal its contents.
The envelope contained two papers detailing the situation at the shores and the problems they were facing.
The king took a few minutes to skim through the contents, and the more he read, the deeper his frown became.
"Haa..." King Gray let out a tired sigh. "Things are getting worse there as well."
"Is it that bad?" the commander couldn’t help but ask.
"Aside from the request for more fighters, another commander-level demon has made an appearance, forcing the men to lose more ground.
"But the strange thing about their situation is that the demons aren’t pressing forward for whatever reason."
The commander furrowed his brows in confusion. It was indeed strange and didn’t make any sense.
Demons were just as intelligent as the other races and would do anything to break into their cities to cause havoc. A few such incidents had happened in the past, and they weren’t pretty.
’But to suddenly slow down... it can’t be that simple. There’s something at play here,’ the commander reasoned.
"What do you plan on doing?" the commander asked. "With the situation at hand, maybe sending more fighters would be pointless."
"Not necessarily." King Gray shook his head. "The demons could change their minds at any time, and if we’re not prepared, we could be caught with our pants down."
With the dungeon situation being a demon’s doing, King Gray had a feeling it was connected.
’They’re planning something sinister, but what?’ His thoughts spun rapidly as he tried to see through their schemes but came up blank. ’This is madness. Why can’t they just be straightforward and dumb creatures?’
Raising his head, he looked straight at his commander and instructed, "Get the reinforcements ready. They will be deployed on the same day as the adventurers."
"Yes, Your Majesty." The commander bowed politely and excused himself.
With the tournament ending in two days, the commander had more than enough time to organize everything to deploy the knights and soldiers. No more than a week should be enough.
King Gray stared at the door for several seconds, his mind drifting back to many thoughts. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
