Chapter 53: Chapter 53 Scrub Scrub Scrub_1

Li Xuan, inside the stone altar, was also puzzled. He didn’t find the task of replacing the rune bricks particularly difficult.

All he needed to do was to dig out the damaged bricks, then, according to their shape, find an identical one in the Qiankun bag and place it in. After it was meticulously positioned, he would infuse it with Zhenyuan.

The process was incredibly straightforward. He didn’t need to expend much effort nor was there a significant Zhenyuan consumption. What was exhausted was quickly replenished, as the spiritual power within the stone altar was incredibly robust.

This was completely different from Li Chengji’s description. Li Xuan didn’t feel any exhaustion, nor did he need to use the Guiyuan Elixirs.

Li Xuan guessed that this might be related to the red-robed woman ghost standing behind him.

Since he entered the stone altar, Li Xuan noticed some changes in the woman ghost’s stature.

She now bore a resemblance to her appearance in the bloody sacrificial scene at Jiangjun Mountain — a layer of brilliant crimson was clinging to her entire body. Red ribbons of light seemed to emit from her figure, fluttering behind her, resembling wings.

For some reason, Li Xuan faintly felt that the woman ghost was in resonance with the Rune Seals inside and outside of the stone altar.

Despite being puzzled, Li Xuan sped up the process of replacing the bricks. He completed the sacrifice promptly, just in time for the end of the Mao hour.

Strangely enough, as Li Xuan made the final arrangements for the triad sacrifices and personally lit the incense, the chilly force within the stone altar was substantially reduced. He did not dwell on this, quickly retreating from the stone altar.

“Done!”

When Li Xuan returned to Li Chengji and his brother, he realized that they were observing him with an odd expression. He glanced at them with a raised eyebrow. “Why are you staring at me like that? Is there something on my face?”

Shortly, he considered a possibility. Had this pair discovered the existence of the ghost woman?

However, he was disappointed. Li Yan asked him curiously, “Didn’t you feel exhausted when you excavated the rune bricks? And what about when you replaced them?”

“I didn’t feel anything.” Li Xuan shook his head and retorted, “Have you done something like this before? Was it hard for you?”

Li Yan clenched his lips without replying. It seemed as if he had painful memories associated with the stone altar.

Li Chengji, on the other hand, stretched a hand out: “Where’s the bag?”

Li Xuan clicked his tongue in dismay, reluctantly returning the two Qiankun bags he had tucked into his sleeves

The bags were really handy and convenient, and Li Xuan greatly envied them. These were indispensable Space Artifacts in this exciting, magical world, into which one could toss anything.

Although he had returned the bags, the bottle of Guiyuan Elixir was still in his sleeve.

Such an elixir was very precious, as it allowed Wu cultivators to quickly regain their energy. It was incredibly practical.

“What’s next? Are we returning home?”

“We will have to wait until tomorrow.” Li Chengji shook his head, looking serious, “This is just one task. We have another pressing matter, and again we’ll need your help, Xuan.”

After leaving the stone altar, the trio continued on their underwater exploration. After about traveling about forty miles south, Li Xuan saw a giant cave standing at the bottom of the lake from a distance.

Once Li Xuan stood at the cavern’s entrance and saw the object bound by numerous chains as thick as water barrels inside, he swallowed hard. “A dragon?”

What he saw was a True Dragon — humped head, deer antlers, rabbit eyes, bull ears, snake neck, clam belly, carp scales, eagle claws, tiger paws.

It resembled a large crocodile but had a longer body and a more majestic posture. A pair of small wings grew on its back.

All of these characteristics were similar to the dragons in ancient paintings, yet the one before Li Xuan’s eyes did not emit any auspicious aura. Its scales were black, and from between the scales, there was a dark mist, as murky as mud, seeping out.

“Hence, this task is even more important than conducting a ritual for the old subordinates of Prince Han and Chen Liang.”

Li Yan also threw him a Qiankun bag at this point, “Go in and give her a bath. Make sure you clean her thoroughly, and don’t leave any crevices between her scales unattended to. They tend to harbour pests that can cause her to itch.”

Li Yan’s Qiankun bag was much smaller, less than half a foot. Inside it, there was nothing more than a set of washing tools and a few green soap nuts, the size of faceplates, giving off a refreshing fragrance.

Li Xuan looked again at the cave, alarmed at the sight of the majestic dragon that was two hundred feet long, “Is this really necessary?”

“What do you think?” Li Yan retorted, “There are also sealing runes here, entry is forbidden unless sanctioned by an imperial edict or an official.”

Li Chengji gave Li Xuan a reassurance, “Our Li family has old ties with the Dragon King, he will not harm you. However, after you go in, you must be respectful, don’t offend and especially do not touch the dragon’s horn.”

Li Xuan had already taken out a huge brush from the little Qiankun bag, he asked curiously, “But since it is the Dragon King, why is he locked here? And even sealed?”

Upon hearing his question, Li Chengji gave a light sigh, “Naturally because of his sins. This one was linked to the Great Battle of Poyang Lake. Our Jin Dynasty foundation and its prosperity is largely due to this Dragon King’s power. In fact, our Li family owes him a lot. We can talk more about the details after you finish with this task.”

Following this, and with great caution, Li Xuan walked into the cave. He first clasped his hands and bowed to the reclining black dragon, “Dragon King, I am Li Xuan, the descendent of Li Lexing, here as instructed by my father to clean your dragon body. I beg for your understanding if I offend in any way.”

It looked as if the black dragon was deep asleep, its eyes tightly closed and its body motionless.

After calming himself, Li Xuan began to scrub the head of the dragon with the brush.

This black dragon apparently didn’t like moving much, so much so that numerous objects such as seashells were stuck to its scales. There were even small crabs and shrimps making homes on the dragon’s body, making the cleaning incredibly difficult.

Fortunately, Li Chengji and the others had prepared well, their brushes were not only strong but included about twenty scraping knives in the bag as well.

Still, it was tiring work. Li Xuan had to put a lot of effort in cleaning each area of the dragon’s scales to return them to their original luster.

What irked him a little was that his father and brother were sitting leisurely at the mouth of the cave playing chess. They had even brought a chess board with them.

However annoyed he may have been, Li Xuan still adhered to the meticulousness he maintained as a forensic doctor. He cleaned every scale on the black dragon’s body, including each crevice, with the peculiar soap nuts.

What was strange to Li Xuan was that he would occasionally find purple-black runes appearing on these scales. When he scrubbed them forcefully, these lines would fade, and streams of black aura would continuously gush out from the crevices between the scales, and then gather behind him.

When Li Xuan turned around, he discovered that the red-clothed ghost woman was swallowing this black mist like a bottomless pit.

Feeling uncertain about the situation, he went to ask his father and brother about it.

But Li Yan just sneered, “What black fog? Seems like you’re still unwell. No, are you trying to feign illness to avoid work?”

Li Chengji opened his Spirit Eye and looked into the cave. He also suspected Li Xuan wanted to slack off and rubbed his forehead in annoyance, “What black fog, rune lines… I don’t see anything. Just make sure to thoroughly clean everything you can. After we finish this matter, I’ll find a way to reward you with another Human-Origin Pill or something similar.”

He decided to dangle a carrot to stimulate Li Xuan’s motivation.

Li Xuan was left speechless, not knowing what to say. All he could do was return to clean the dragon scales.

Luckily, besides absorbing the black fog, the ghost woman did nothing out of the ordinary. Li Xuan didn’t feel his chest growing colder and the green spot didn’t seem to be expanding either. Thus, he concentrated on scrubbing, without any distractions.

The task was tedious, but it wasn’t a problem for Li Xuan, who had been a forensic doctor for two years. Even if the place was disgusting, he would still clean very meticulously, scrubbing back and forth several times without showing any impatience.

It wasn’t until the late night of the second day that Li Xuan finally cleaned the last scale on the tail of the black dragon.

Then he gave a deep bow to the black dragon, hastily left the cave, and floated towards the lake surface with his father and brother waiting outside.

It couldn’t be helped, he had to return to the Liudao Division for check-in early in the morning, he was keen to get home.

At this moment, Li Xuan had no idea that the moment he stepped out of the cave, the sleeping black dragon suddenly opened its eyes. It even poked its head out of the cave, staring deeply in his direction.

What was surprising was, that even though the black dragon made such a big move, even the highly cultivated Li Chengji and Li Yan knew nothing about it.
