Chapter 37: Double Date (1)

Exiting the beach, the couple found themselves in a forest. Unlike normal dungeons, the layout of instance dungeons was completely random. As such, the only way to find the dungeon boss was to scan the entire area.

But that was easier said than done. While most dungeons resembled some confined space, Instance dungeons were often so big they were considered limitless.

Moreover, an Instance Dungeon, at the minimum, had seven times the monsters than in ordinary dungeons. It meant that as the Divers looked for the dungeon boss, random monsters often attacked them.

The dungeon’s expansive nature and random monster mobs not only wasted their time but also drained them of energy to continue hunting for the boss monster. That’s why even the strongest parties always picked their fights wisely when exploring an Instance dungeon.

Unfortunately, the confrontation from before had messed up Adrian’s senses, and he kept attacking anything and everything that came his way. Thanks to that, he had levelled up to twelve.

*ROARRR!!!*

Another Direwolf jumped from within the thick bushes, charging towards Adrian.

"Tsk, why don’t you fuckers come at once," Adrian clicked his tongue before squatting to dodge the beast’s claws and grabbed it by the tail.

The wolf thrashed about, desperate to break free from Adrian’s grasp. But the creature only made Adrian more enraged. His anger surged as he swung the creature forcefully, smashing its head into a nearby tree, shattering both the tree and the wolf’s skull.

[You have killed a Direwolf! Exp +200]

[Total Exp: 950/1300]

However, the sound of the falling tree only served as a beacon to attract more monsters towards them. Adrian knew this and was disappointed in himself for losing his cool so easily.

On the other hand, Sophia got lost in her thoughts after noticing Adrian’s strange behaviour.

For the three years she had known him, he had always been the calm and collected one amongst the heroes. But now, it felt as if he had lost his ways. Either way, Sophia knew it wasn’t her place to judge him. Not after whatever he had been through.

Only God knew what Adrian had gone through after his ’death’. Sophia thought somewhere within those experiences, something must have altered his personality.

On top of that, Adrian, in his mind, had been betrayed by those he once held close. The mess must have had a compounding effect on him, making him the raging mess he had become.

While Sophia was lost in her thoughts, a direwolf tried to jump her from behind. She nonchalantly swung her hand without breaking her train of thought.

Her simple gesture emanated a massive wind blade, effortlessly slicing the creature in two. The severed halves of the direwolf fell to the ground, and its blood scattered in all directions.

Adrian saw her from the corner of his eyes and knew she must have received another power-up from her previous expedition. He would have congratulated her earlier, but now he couldn’t utter a single word of appreciation for her.

’Shit... What’s wrong with me?’ Adrian mused. ’This ain’t the time to hold petty grudges. Especially knowing it might be a while before I get to see her again...’

Suddenly, they heard the distant rustling of trees. It didn’t take a genius to know what was happening. The couple shared a glance and got ready as the horde of monsters neared them.

The creatures came, and both of them attacked the horde. But to their surprise, the monsters charged past them without a second glance. Adrian and Sophia exchanged puzzled looks, watching the creatures sprint away as if their lives depended on it.

"What in the world just happened?" Sophia scratched her head in confusion.

Adrian shrugged, equally baffled. "I have no idea. Maybe they’re on a tight schedule? Fashionably late for some monster gathering?"

"That’s the ninth time I have heard that ’joke’, Adrian..." Sophia rolled her eyes.

"I remember you laughed the previous eight times, so why not now?"

Upon hearing those words, Sophia broke a smile, not at the joke but at the absurdity of the situation. However, the relief only lasted seconds as the ground beneath them shook.

Initially, Adrian believed another horde might be approaching. However, the rhythmic thumping sound didn’t agree with his thoughts. Something was headed their way, something big and strong.

Adrian’s eyes widened, realisation hitting him like a ton of bricks. "Oh no."

"What do you mean ’oh no’?" Sophia squinted ahead and saw the creature approaching them. "That’s... definitely an ’oh no’."

As the towering creature emerged from the foliage, the forest seemed to shrink in comparison. A massive troll, with a face only a mother troll could love, stood before them. Its eyes glared down at Adrian and Sophia with hunger.

"A fucking troll of all things?" Sophia scoffed. "It would be difficult, but we can take it down-"

However, as she said that, a second troll appeared behind the first one, cutting her off.

"Yup, we’re fucked."

"Stop talking and start running!" Adrian yelled, grabbing her hand and running wildly through the forest.
