Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer-Chapter 297: Monkey King (1)
Chapter 297: Monkey King (1)
A week passed in the blink of an eye. Adrian sold everything he wanted to and became one of the richest players on the first floor. However, it was the end of his time on the first floor.
The lower floors had a time limit to clear them. The tower would throw out the player if they didn’t climb to the next floor within the given time. Quite a few agents from the DRA took advantage of this and, thanks to that, humanity had a lot of info about the first ten floors of the tower.
Other than that, if the players wanted to stay on the said floor, they had to denounce their participation and then they could stay on the first floor as residents. That’s what most of the poachers did to expand their numbers.
The other way to leave the tower was by paying the admins to receive a key to leave the tower of their own volition. These conditions were only valid for the first 10 floors. After that, climbing the tower became a serious business that Adrian was eager to be a part of.
’So this is the Colosseum.’
Adrian stood in front of the grand structure made of stone and towering arches. The place had an air of faded glory, as if it had once been a vibrant centre of entertainment, but was now struggling to retain its former splendour.
The manager, a middle-aged man with a weary expression, sat at a desk near the entrance and explained the rules to the group of participants gathered around him.
"Welcome to the first-floor trial," the manager began, bored beyond his wit. "The challenge is straightforward. You must defeat a monster within the Colosseum."
He continued, "The monsters come in waves, and you can select how many waves you wish to face. As long as you clear the waves you choose, you will receive the rewards and proceed to the next floor."
Adrian listened attentively as the manager continued. "There is no lower or upper limit to the number of waves you can face. But the more waves you clear, the higher will be your reward."
Many people nodded, clearly thinking about taking the shortest path to the next floor. Even Adrian was aware of the little exploit everyone performed to clear the first floor with little to no effort.
Most participants faced only one wave, as it was the quickest way to clear the trial and move on. It was even easier because the first wave involved killing a goblin, which was relatively easier than facing a horde upon hordes of monsters.
The manager sighed, looking around at the participants with a tired expression. Everyone knew why the man was sporting such an expression.
Since everyone discovered this one-wave exploit, no one even tried to go beyond the first wave. This led to a sharp decline in the Colosseum’s popularity. Earlier they used to have thousands of viewers, but now, we’re lucky to get a dozen.
Since then, the manager, who once used to be one of the richest people on the floor, came up with a new way to afford the upkeep of the arena.
He paused, his eyes reflecting a hint of bitterness as he noticed the players staring at him.
"To compensate for the lost revenue, we now charge a fee for taking the trial. If you want to proceed to the next floor, you must pay the fee or else you will not be allowed to take the test.
The participants grumbled but lined up to pay. After all, they didn’t have a choice, as even filing a complaint to the admin had no effect on the manager.
Why would there be any action against the manager when the admin was the one who came up with the idea, in exchange for certain compensation, of course?
Adrian joined the line, observing the surrounding area. The seats that once held cheering crowds were mostly empty, and the manager’s demeanour showed just how much the place had fallen from its peak.
When it was Adrian’s turn, he approached the counter and handed over the fee.
"I have a few questions," he said, looking at the bored man.
The manager looked at him, slightly intrigued. "Go ahead."
"What is the highest number of waves cleared?" Adrian asked.
The manager sighed again and placed a record book on the counter in front of Adrian. "Here, take a look."
Adrian opened the book and scanned the list of names. Asgardian gods dominated the top spots, with each of them clearing at least twenty waves.
Zeus’s name was conspicuously absent from the top ten, replaced by the names of other legendary figures. The list made it clear why the Asgardians ruled over the lower floors.
Setting records had become their way of battling for control over certain floors without engaging in direct confrontations. They set records to establish ownership because infighting between factions was prohibited until the 20th floor, and Adrian was unaware of the reasons behind this prohibition.
That’s why the Olympians could freely move around the first floor, despite Asgard having control over the floors. Adrian closed the book and looked up. He had another question to ask.
"Can I continue fighting the waves even if I choose one wave as my target?"
The manager looked confused for a moment, but then nodded. "Yes, you can. The waves will keep coming until you either defeat them all or surrender."
Satisfied with the answers, Adrian chose one wave as his goal and left to take the trial, much to the manager’s dismay, as he had hoped Adrian would set a higher target.
Adrian entered the Colosseum and looked around the place while waiting for his turn. The arena was vast, with high walls and a sandy floor that bore the scars of countless battles. Within ten minutes, Adrian was called to take the test.
Adrian took his position in the centre of the arena, his eyes set on the gates on the other side. The following moment, the gates creaked open, and a small goblin emerged, snarling and brandishing a crude weapon made from the bone of some creature.
The crowd, though sparse, watched with no interest.
The goblin charged at him, its movements quick but uncoordinated. Adrian sidestepped the attack and backhanded the creature, ending the goblin’s life in a single, precise strike. The creature was flung to the other side of the arena and squashed like a fly.
Although people were surprised, they didn’t react because they thought Adrian would do the same thing as the rest and quit. But they were in for a surprise.
"Wave one cleared! Do you wish to continue?"
"Yes, I want to continue."
The crowd murmured, surprised by his decision. It had been a long time since anyone faced more than one wave. The gates opened again, this time releasing two goblins. Adrian sighed, as he had hoped for something better.
The goblins attacked simultaneously, but Adrian was prepared and he swiftly grabbed both of their necks, snapping them without the tiniest bit of effort. He grabbed both of their necks and snapped them without the tiniest bit of effort.
The crowd’s uninterested demeanour disappeared and turned into murmurs of interest, and a few people leaned forward in their seats.
"Wave two cleared! Do you wish to continue?" the manager called out.
"Yes," Adrian replied.
The waves continued, each one more challenging than the last. The goblins were replaced by stronger and more dangerous monsters: wolves, ogres, and even a few trolls.
As he faced wave after wave, the crowd’s interest grew. More spectators trickled into the Colosseum, drawn by the unexpected spectacle. Even the manager got excited as someone had gone past the seventh wave after a long time.
By the time he reached the tenth wave, the Colosseum was buzzing with excitement. The manager watched with greedy eyes as more and more people showed up to watch the fight. Maybe, just maybe, this could be the comeback the Colosseum needed.
The gates opened once more, and a massive ogre called the Overlord lumbered into the arena. It roared, its voice shaking the very foundations of the Colosseum. Adrian took a deep breath, retrieving the Hydra’s Dagger for the first time in the trial.
The battle was fierce, the ogre’s strength formidable. But Adrian’s agility and past experience gave him the edge. He dodged the ogre’s powerful swings and struck with precision, eventually bringing the beast to its knees.
With a final, powerful strike, Adrian defeated the ogre. The crowd erupted in cheers, their excitement was at an all-time high. The manager, too, seemed reinvigorated, his eyes gleaming with newfound hope. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
"Wave ten cleared! Do you wish to continue?" the manager asked, his voice filled with respect.
"Stop asking stupid questions and keep them coming until I say so," Adrian yelled back.
However, instead of being offended, the manager jumped from excitement and eagerly set the stage for the next round. It was a round where even the lesser entities struggled to win.
