Chapter 9: Breaking point (2)

Selene dug her nails into her skin, trying to let both her anger and desperation show too much. If Xavier had already changed his mind then she had no one to turn to. "Lend me your power and I will repay you any way you see fit."

Xavier approached Selene and lifted her left hand which still had the wedding ring now covered in blood. He slipped it from her finger since she no longer needed it. "Seeing your return to glory will be enough payment."

Xavier was bored of the town and all the silly drama. He needed something to make the days more exciting and what better way to do that than to marry Selene? Something entertaining seemed to happen wherever she went.

It also bothered him to see her allow a mixed-blood to walk all over her.

"Before I agree to this, do I need to be concerned about you still in love with him? Will you run in fear when he comes around like you aren’t a pureblood?" Xavier asked.

While he wanted to save Selene from making a mockery of their kind, Xavier couldn’t put up with her acting so weakly especially if she were to carry his name.

"He disrespected me by bringing a woman home. He killed someone I loved. I will never go back to him. He sealed that fate,’ Selene replied, her confidence at an all-time high.

Any bit of love she had left for Gabriel was gone after what he did.

Xavier tossed the ring Selene wouldn’t be needing anymore. "I wouldn’t say you have nothing. You have me now."

"Why do you look so surprised when I was the one who made the offer?" Xavier asked, his hand going to Selene’s cheek to wipe away a drop of blood. "I will have her put to rest somewhere to your liking. You need a warm bath and bed."

Selene wasn’t ready to leave Elsie’s side yet. "I can help to bury her. She got caught in my mess and lost her life."

"Feeling guilty isn’t going to solve anything now. You need to get cleaned up. Think about the one who is alive," Xavier said, noticing someone else in the carriage. "Will she not need to be comforted?"

Selene thought of Agnes. She hadn’t considered how Agnes was feeling.

"I can kill him now if you wish," Xavier offered.

Selene thought she heard wrong but Xaver was patiently waiting for her answer. "If you kill him, you will upset the kingdom. His name is praised for bringing us a victory and he is to be rewarded by the king himself. I did not come to you just for you to do this. I will deal with Gabriel myself. I will try my best not to drag you into my troubles."

"You are marrying me," Xaver said as he walked by Selene. "I am already in your troubles."

Selene followed Xavier to the carriage. She rushed here without thinking how much this would affect him though it was her problem. She was too desperate and in a rush to find a safe place to think her plan through.

Agnes hugged Elsie’s body when Xavier opened the door. Lord Blackthorn was terrifying to be around because of all the rumours and like the lady, he was a pureblood. Agne’s status was far below the pair despite having two vampire parents.

Xavier was surprised to see a head without a body. "Did you not lay a finger on him for this?"

"I wanted to but I did not. I am stronger than him but he is still a skilled soldier who could have injured me. To use your power and influence to get back at him was the better choice," Selene replied.

Would Xavier have taken her in if she was wounded? What good would she be to him as a wife then?

Other than her lineage, what good was she to him now?

Selene knew Gabriel cherished his new status so she also knew where to hit him where it would hurt before she would rip his head clean off his body.

Xavier entered the carriage and took the dead maid. The beloved hero did this?

"Take your lady inside and get her out of that dress for me. So you can get cleaned up," Xavier clarified what he meant for the overthinking maid. "I don’t have plans of making her mine tonight. I promise to put her somewhere safe."

Selene was reluctant to leave Elsie with Xavier but since she ran to him and he welcomed her inside, she had to trust him.

Selene held Agnes’s hand and led her inside what would soon be their new home.

"Are you safe here, Milady? The lord-"

"Has better hearing than most," Selene hushed Agnes. She looked back and to her horror, Xavier was smiling. Since when did he smile so often?

"Don’t let my good hearing stop you from speaking about me. Go on, I will pretend I do not hear it," said Xavier.

Selene preferred not to speak about Xavier when he was around to hear. She vaguely remembered their youth and the rumours about him. While Selene normally would ignore gossip since she had her fair share of gossip directed at her, she was well aware some of what was said about Xavier was true.

He was a dangerous man who was hard to get close to. His strength as a pureblood was said to be close to the king since Xavier came from a strong lineage of purebloods. The Blackthorns were one of the five families responsible for creating mixed-bloods.

Agnes was worried about staying with the lord but for now, she had to do something about Selene’s state. "What to do? We didn’t get the trunk with your things."

Selene didn’t know what to do about her things as well. It would be foolish to try to return for her things now. Should they return there then Gabriel might think she returned so he could pity her.

"Why are you standing by the front door with such a pitiful expression?" Xavier questioned. Something about her current state infuriated him.

Where was the Selene he vaguely remembered from their youth? Had the fall of her family home turned her into this?

"The lady needs a dress, my Lord. If you have one lying around," Agnes spoke up but lowered her head as his gaze frightened her. His eyes sent a chilling feeling over her. How was Selene going to survive living here?

"Lying around? Do you think I waltz around in dresses during my spare time? There aren’t any dresses here unless you want to take something from one of the maids. If you only need something to sleep in then you may choose something of mine."

"Thank you, Lord Blackthorn," Selene curtsied. freewebnoveℓ.com

"We will need to work on you not referring to me by my title. I do not need a wife who will sound like a servant. In the morning, I will have a dress brought for you and then we will go to get what you left behind. He will not do something foolish in my presence," Xavier assured Selene.

The kingdom could call Gabriel a hero all they want but nothing changed that among purebloods. Gabriel was still of low status.
