Chapter 296: Regret (1)

Michael was surprised to see that Xavier joined in stabbing Vivienne. Two families might be after Xavier if they were to hear of this.

Michael started to approach Xavier since it was time for them to get out of here.

Vivienne, still standing and clinging to Xavier, was in shock that Xavier had stabbed her. It was something she could expect from Darius, but not from Xavier.

Had she hurt him so much that he would want to kill her?

Was she not his first love?

"Why?" Vivienne asked, puzzled by his betrayal. "I did nothing to you. I have only ever loved you."

"When you target my wife, that is doing something to me, and your hands were not clean. All the women you killed for having his attention. Even the ones you knew were forced to his bed. I know about your maid," Xavier revealed.

Vivienne wished to know how Xavier found out about that incident, but first, she needed to clear her name.

"I didn’t take her to his bed. He lured her there and did that. She asked me to kill her, so I did. I granted what she wanted. I did not want to kill her," Vivienne said, her head pressed against Xavier’s shoulder.

"You were not as bad as Darius, but you are far from innocent. You have killed many who were innocent, and you have changed so much that I believe you will only cause more pain to anyone here and my wife," said Xavier.

Xavier pulled the dagger out of Vivienne.

Had she not become like this, Xavier would have left her alone. She would have died only from the wound Darius made.

Vivienne smiled.

Perhaps it was better like this.

If she had lived, Vivienne didn’t know what she would have done. She hadn’t planned that far ahead.

Her father would turn his back on her since she would no longer be queen with Darius gone, and Darius’s family would come after her. Her friends were traitors, so she couldn’t rely on them. She had no one at her side.

They all either had no use for her, were dead, or betrayed her.

It was a cruel ending that left Vivienne with one regret.

"I should have gotten to Natalie first, but her child won’t be a royal. She doesn’t have Darius to protect her," Vivienne laughed.

Natalie’s plans would come to a quick end with Darius gone. With a new king coming, Natalie had no place in the palace. She would be given a home and some money for her to make the most of for the rest of her life.

Vivienne knew how Darius’s family could be, so they wouldn’t raise the child unless they showed great talents.

Vivienne’s laughter increased as she felt happy with how everything was going to end.

She frowned when Xavier stepped away from her, no longer giving her something to lean against.

"She’s not good for you," Vivienne said, speaking of Selene. "Some time in the future, you’re going to regret not picking me over her."

Xavier left Vivienne’s side to collect the other holy weapon. He needed to leave one behind.

Xavier kneeled and used the holy weapon he had stabbed Vivienne with to stab Darius with again.

"He is already dead," Michael said.

Xavier ignored Michael and tossed the holy weapon close to Darius’s hand. Now he had two holy weapons to his name and would leave behind the one belonging to the palace.

Xavier stood up and looked at Michael. "You did nothing tonight," he said.

"That’s not true," Michael said, careful with where he stepped. "I got her the holy weapon, and I stopped him from getting one. I did a lot of speaking here tonight, and why do you think it is possible the guards have not stumbled upon us?"

Michael continued, "I have been redirecting them, and now I need blood. We must go since I am getting weaker."

Michael was the first one to walk away, with Xavier close behind him.

"I am going to leave to end his orders to take the humans. They must be released now and returned to their homes," said Michael.

"Some of their homes are burning to the ground," Xavier revealed.

"That fool. It will take a long time for humans to live peacefully beside us again. War could still happen. This will only cause the attacks to continue," Michael said, annoyed by what Darius had done.

It meant whoever became king or queen had a lot of work to do.

’The king must be someone who cares, and I care. I have good reason to care," Michael said, still fishing for Xavier’s vote. "The king must fix this mess, and I am willing to do it. I was against gathering humans from the start."

"I don’t like to share who I will vote for. What is this?" Xavier asked, his eyes narrowing in on the trail of dead bodies. "Did Vivienne go on a killing spree?"

"Not that I know of. She only went after her old friend and then her husband. I was going to assume this was your work. It looks like I cannot escape getting blood on my hands. I know this man," Michael said, picking up the head which was no longer attached to a body. "He is from the court."

"They both are," Michael said, noticing the pattern. "Was Darius out to kill his court tonight?"

"No," Xavier said, knowing who was present in the palace. "Stop the guards from coming here. Tell them that both the king and queen are dead. They are to stop the attacks on humans and free them."

"Right. Will you be back-"

"No. After this, I am going back to my estate. This is your chance to prove that you would be a good king. Do not mess it up, or I will come for you," Xavier said, leaving Michael behind.

The first person Xavier thought of to be behind the deaths of the men from the court was Zephyr, and either Selene’s parents or Orlork might be with him..

Xavier had no choice but to lend Zephyr a hand before he flew back to the estate.

Xavier ran first to the court to see if Zephyr had gone there in search of anyone on his list. By the time Xavier reached the court, there was already one man from the court dead, along with the guards who were stationed outside.

Xavier changed direction to where all of Darius’s family rested in the palace. This was the only place Zephyr could be since Darius’s father would be there sleeping.
