Chapter 289: Preparing for a fight (2)

"I must go to Camilla and then find my sons to take them to my home. I must also inform the Blackthorns," Orlork said as he followed Xavier out of the dungeon. "I will meet with you when I am done."

"Say with Camilla and the others if you need to," Xavier replied.

"They will be safe in my home. I cannot leave you to fight this battle alone when demons might be involved. Zephyr might use this chance to go after the men in the court. One of us should be nearby to help him," said Orlork.

There was so much to do within so little time.

"Instead of returning to my side, go to Zephyr’s side. You know better how to get around the palace. I can’t have something happen to Selene’s grandfather before they get a chance to reunite. I will send for help if I need it," said Xaver.

Orlork was still reluctant to leave Xavier alone. It was not only Darius whom Xavier might have to fight, but humans who would be fighting back, priests, and now demons.

Rather than stand around arguing about who would join Xavier, Orlork decided to leave to get what he needed to deal with out of the way. The sooner he placed his children somewhere safe and helped Zephyr, the sooner he could return to Xavier’s side.

"Lucas!" Xavier called out, stopping Lucas from going in the other direction. "Put the guards on high alert. The estate might be attacked tonight or in the morning. No one is allowed inside without Selene’s permission. You are to be at her side."

Lucas followed Xavier. ’Who will be attacking us?"

"Darius is rounding up humans, and demons might be among us. The humans responsible for the attacks will go after purebloods. I am counting on you to protect her in my absence. Protect her with your life," Xavier said, trusting Lucas.

"Always," Lucas promised. "If you are leaving, I will select a group to go with you."

"Let it be no more than five. I want everyone else here to keep Selene and my mother safe. Move fast to inform the others," Xavier said.

Lucas left Xavier’s side to go to the guards.

In the meantime, Xavier returned to his room to find the holy weapon and to inform Selene of what was happening.

"There will be others using holy weapons. What if you are injured by one and you cannot make it home in time for me to heal you? I know that it is wrong to say, but can’t we stay here to let them fight each other? Then, go at the last moment to kill who remains?" Selene asked.

Selene was concerned about what would happen to the town, but at the same time, Selene cared most about Xavier’s safety.

Even though Xavier carried his own holy weapon, there were others out there who also had holy weapons. The thought of Xavier being outnumbered scared Selene.

"I cannot miss this chance to kill Darius. Our lives will not be peaceful if he lives and succeeds with his plans. Then there is the demon. I need to get rid of it. No more vampires should die because of a demon playing games," Xavier said, sticking to his plans.

Xavier stopped looking for what he might need. He had to comfort Selene in some way before he left. "I will do my best to return to you as I am now. If I somehow manage to be wounded by a holy weapon, I will fly right to you."

"You must," Selene replied. "If only we had kept up with my training, then I could join you."

"Selene, you could be a skilled fighter, and I wouldn’t allow you to join me tonight. Regardless of what you might hear, do not leave the estate. I am leaving you to decide who will be granted entry here. Promise me that you will stay," Xavier said, needing to hear it.

"I will stay here. That is, unless the estate somehow becomes taken over. You can trust me to look after our home. I should get dressed properly and be with your mother. Oh!" Selene gasped, remembering her family. "Will my family be fine?"

"They’ve managed to remain hidden all this time. I’m sure they will be safe now, or they will use this time to go to the palace to kill those who were after them years ago. Many of our enemies shall fall tonight, and then I shall find a way for you to be with your parents," Xavier promised.

All Xavier needed from Selene right now was for her to remain safe.

Selene stood up, placing her hands around Xavier’s waist to bring him close. This night was going to move slowly, so Selene might not see Xavier for hours. She might not get any updates for many hours, so to make up for the time she wouldn’t see him, Selene wanted to hold him now.

Was it possible she could pass on her talent to heal him without needing to be near?

If she hugged him long enough, would he be protected?

Selene doubted her talent worked this way, but it helped to calm her mind. Xavier was going to return home. He was never an easy man to defeat, and Selene liked to think that wouldn’t change now.

"Go after who you must and then return home to me. I will not forgive you if you wander off in search of anyone else. I won’t keep you back," Selene said, letting go of Xavier so he could leave.

Xavier responded by pulling Selene back for a second hug.

Selene loved that he also dreaded being away from her. As much as she wanted him to stay, Xavier was the best person to rid the town of Darius and a demon.

"You must go, and I must go down to instruct the others of what they are to do. All the servants must come inside to be safe," said Selene.

It was not only herself, Josephine, and Agnes that Selene wanted to protect, but everyone who worked on the estate.

Selene grabbed Xavier’s shirt, pulling him down for a kiss. She didn’t think of a goodbye kiss since Xavier would return as he promised.

Xavier let go of Selene and went to get the holy weapon. He decided not to take anything else since other weapons or armour would be useless.

Xavier took one last look at Selene before heading to the balcony door so he could fly off to where Darius was. This was one night when Xavier wouldn’t hide his talents as they would all be needed to kill Darius and the others.

There would be no holding back tonight since someone important was going to die, and Xavier would make sure it was not him.
