Chapter 286: Monsters (1)

Unaware of the dangers heading toward the town, Xavier retired to bed with Selene.

While Selene was sound asleep, Xavier was awake, thinking of his next move. They had finally gotten rid of Gabriel, but many others still needed to be dealt with so he could have a peaceful life with Selene before someone else would show up.

The next person Xavier wanted to go after was Darius, and with the holy weapon he had in his hold, that would be possible.

What Xavier needed now was the perfect timing for Darius to be away from his guards so the kill wouldn’t be seen.

If not for Selene, Xavier would have long killed Darius and not cared about who would come after him. Now, he had to keep Selene tucked away where she would be safe since others would go after her if they couldn’t get to him.

Xavier raked his fingers through Selene’s hair. Since Gabriel’s death, Selene seemed a little bit more relaxed, but Xavier knew she wouldn’t be truly comfortable until they got rid of Cassandra.

There wasn’t a question in Xavier’s mind that Cassandra might come after Selene.

Xavier stopped moving his fingers through Selene’s hair when she stirred in her sleep. Her plans to stay awake at night always failed since she was so busy during the day.

Selene had unexpectedly caused Xavier to change his life around since he was no longer more active at night. To roam around at night meant he had to leave Selene alone in bed, and he couldn’t possibly do that.

Xavier looked over Selene in the direction of the balcony door after he heard a noise. He waited for a moment to hear the guards taking care of the intruder, but he was met with silence.

Whoever came was welcomed.

They were welcomed, but they annoyed Xavier since they disturbed his time with Selene.

Xavier slipped out of bed as quietly as he could not to wake Selene. He walked over to the balcony, deciding if he would kill the person outside.

Xavier wasn’t pleased to see it was Orlork and Jasper. He closed the door behind him and went out to the two fools.

"Why do you look so grumpy, Xavier? Are we disturbing something?" Orlork asked.

"It is late," Xavier pointed out.

"It is. This is the perfect time for us to go around the town. Were you sleeping?" Orlork asked, taking notice of Xavier’s attire. "At this time of the day? What has become of you?"

"Some of us enjoy being with our wives to lie around at any hour of the day. You would not understand since your wife wants to kill you. What have you come for? Be quick with it," said Xavier.

It wouldn’t be long before Selene noticed he was missing.

"I was speaking to Zephyr earlier. He showed me markings which resemble the language of demons. I have studied that language for years to recognise it. I suspect a demon has attached itself to a human here," said Orlork.

"This is nothing new. With all that is happening in the town these days, the arrival of a demon should be expected. Did you come to ask if I know where the demon is?" Xavier asked, hoping it wasn’t so since he didn’t know any demon.

Xavier wasn’t friends with all creatures.

"No," Orlork replied, shaking his head. "Zephyr wanted me to look for this demon since it will bring trouble. I didn’t want to get involved since demons would not target purebloods, but after some thought, I don’t want a lot of demons running around."

"You won’t have to search hard for a demon. They will make their presence known immediately and try to find a way to bring other demons up from the underworld. If you were a demon, where would you go to gather humans to use?" Xavier asked.

"There are many places I would go. There is one thing that confuses me. How did the church lose its power?" Orlork asked. "For the years I have been alive, I have never witnessed this. I don’t believe it was merely abandoned."

A demon was present, and all of a sudden, the church lost its power was not a coincidence to Orlork.

"I do wonder if a demon attaches itself to a human, could it enter a church and corrupt it? I cannot think of any other way a church would lose its power. I heard you entered a church. Did you find anything strange?" Orlork inquired.

"I found it strange that one of the priests was so afraid of the other priests. He was getting ready to run. They have been going around murdering innocent vampire families. If I were a demon, I would enjoy that," Xavier said, intrigued by what Orlork spoke of.

The attacks on vampires did spill a lot of blood, which a demon would be attracted to.

"I would like to give humans the benefit of the doubt. The holy ones should be able to tell when there is a demon among them. All a demon wants is power and for death to be in the air. How foolish could humans be to not notice it?" Orlork wondered.

Again, Orlork had the thought to study humans to understand their behaviours since they often made decisions he could not understand.

"You would be surprised by the decisions they made," Xavier replied.

"I think a demon could be around Darius as well with all the plans that he is carrying out-"

"No. That is all Darius’s doing. His plans come from his head. What is happening with the churches might be the work of a demon. Go down to the front door and have Harold escort you to the dungeon. I have a priest there," Xavier said, returning inside after.

"I cannot use this door?" Orlork asked.

"No," Xavier answered, grip on the doorknob strong enough to almost break it. "If either one of you sets foot in this room where Selene rests, you will be getting a welcome stay in the dungeon."

Orlork jumped off the balcony to the garden below, followed by Jasper, who flew down.

Xavier closed the door and locked it.

When he returned to the bed, Xavier found Selene wide awake.

"I think we must get stones for the balcony so I don’t wake when you need to speak to your grandfather. You should go meet him. I do not mind," Selene said, deciding to stay in bed. "Have fun in the dungeon. It is a strange thing to say, isn’t it?"

"It is not. I will be back as soon as I can. If I must leave, I will inform you first," Xavier promised, going to the bed to kiss Selene before leaving.
