Chapter 277: Same enemies (3)
Michael turned to Selene to have her convince Xavier. "Surely you can talk some sense into him. This is a dangerous game your husband will be playing, so it’s better to have someone like me at his side."
"I don’t know you well enough to trust you with my husband. You can have motives you are hiding and betray my husband once you get what you were after," said Selene.
"I do have a motive," Michael revealed. "Darius’s plans clash with my plans because of the woman I am currently with. She is a mixed-blood, so you can see where I have a problem with Darius."
When the king didn’t want to acknowledge mixed-bloods as vampires, it placed Michael in a difficult position.
"I am going to keep the peace between purebloods, mixed-bloods, and humans. The others aren’t going to do the same. You haven’t been in the palace since I arrived to hear the bright ideas they have come up with. Take a visit there and see the other options," Michael suggested.
Selene was surprised to come across another pureblood who was with a mixed-blood. She had been questioned on why she settled for Gabriel, so it had to be harder for someone like Michael.
Selene was curious if the Valeforts accepted the woman Michael was with now, or was it that no one knew of her yet.
"This might come as a surprise, but I’ve already secured a lot of votes. It would help me seal the deal if I had your vote and the votes of the people who secretly want you to be king. I need this so I don’t need to worry about her safety. That’s something you can relate to," Michael said, glancing at Selene.
Selene left it for Xavier to decide instead of speaking up to convince him. Michael did have good reason to become the next king, but how were they to know that what Michael was saying was the truth?
Michael smiled, willing to wait until the day would come for votes to be made. "Let us hold off on that and focus on the attacks. I can help you. You’re a powerful man, but this isn’t a fight you should take alone. You need every pureblood who is willing to help."
Michael hoped Xavier wasn’t too stubborn to refuse help. This was a serious matter, and had Michael been awake sooner, he would have dealt with it far quicker than the palace was.
"Rather than search for who is behind the attacks, Darius plans to start gathering the humans. He’s been secretly building where he will place them, and now that they are done, it won’t be long before the palace guards start picking up humans from tonight," said Michael.
"How do you know this? Darius is that foolish to speak of his plans where anyone can hear?" Selene asked.
"Sometimes he tries to be private, but I have good hearing. Darius considers the palace to be his home, so he says and does as he likes there. You’d be surprised how foolish your king can be. Gathering the humans is the big show he wants to put on," Michael said.
"I knew that much. It is all he has to please the purebloods. Most of them like his plans to make it so that they can take blood as they want without having to pay for it. Pureblood attacks on humans have started," Xavier replied, more willing to work with Michael now.
"Has your family ever encountered a pureblood who has lost control of themselves and gone on to attack humans? They calm down after and don’t understand why it happened," Xavier said, curious if it was happening out of town.
Michael nodded his head. "There was something like that. I hope you don’t mention it to anyone since the Valeports don’t want it to get out. I’m told it happened a few weeks back. Once they caught the pureblood, restrained and didn’t give them any blood, they went back to normal."
"My uncle assumed it was from the blood we bought, which is why we switched to having the humans come in to offer their blood before us and then leave. The only other explanation was witchcraft involved, but I doubt witches would work with humans," Michael said, dismissing this idea.
Like vampires, witches had a bad history with humans as they were often burned when caught, and humans went so far as to accuse others who were innocent of witchcraft.
"Witches don’t like to come out of hiding anymore unless it is for someone they trust. If a witch did work with humans, then it wouldn’t be just to help them against vampires. It would be for something more sinister. I know a witch I can speak to," Xavier said.
Michael was impressed. "After the others ordered that all witches be captured, you still managed to have a witch who would want to meet with you."
"I pay them and leave them alone. You can have many friendships when you leave others alone. What else have you heard in the palace?" Xavier asked.
"Now I make for a good partner, don’t I? There’s nothing else concerning yet other than the women fighting to be at Darius’s side. Have you heard that he is having a child with one of his mistresses, and the queen is taking men at her side?" Michael asked, wanting to laugh.
The palace had become a joke.
"There are a lot of purebloods who want to kill each other staying in the palace. It concerns me that the palace is where the weapons they need to kill each other are. I don’t trust Darius, Vivienne or the court," Michael said, concerned that the holy weapons might be used wrongly.
"Those weapons are kept to kill vampires who commit awful crimes, but I think it is time we get rid of them. We leave the door open for so many unnecessary deaths by keeping them around. They need to be destroyed," said Michael.
Michael could think of better ways to punish vampires who did the unthinkable. They could be imprisoned to spend the rest of their lives regretting their actions.
Darius knowing where holy weapons were placed was not good. Especially when Darius would like everyone out of the way so he could be the only king.
"I will work with you to stop the attacks, and then we can speak about how much of a good king you could be. There is much I have found out that I can share with you, and in return, I need you to share everything you hear in the palace. Deal?" Xavier asked, raising his hand for Michael to shake.
"Deal," Michael agreed. He smiled after Xavier gripped his hand a little too hard.
"If you stab me in the back, and Darius going after mixed-bloods will be the least of your concerns," Xavier warned Michael.
