Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 263: Losing faith (1)
Chapter 263: Losing faith (1)
"So, you are telling me that Gabriel’s wife stabbed him with a holy weapon, he made it to your estate, and now he is in your dungeon? Why did you need to tell me of your crimes?" Isaac asked, wishing he could forget everything he had heard. "I want to find my way back into the court."
"I don’t see how what I told you would stop you from returning. Are you going to tell on me, Isaac?" Xavier asked, stopping to look at Isaac.
"I am getting the feeling that if I don’t give you a good answer, I might end up in the dungeon right beside him," Isaac replied.
"Well done. You are smart again," Xavier said, his gaze going toward the church.
Xavier sat with Isaac inside his carriage, waiting for his moment to enter.
Isaac looked around the carriage. "You are not afraid someone overheard what I said?"
"There are stones inside the carriage. It was a great addition after I married Selene," Xavier responded.
"Oh. Oh," Isaac realised what Xavier meant. He moved his hand from touching the seat. "There’s plenty of room on the estate you own, yet you have decided to ruin your carriage. Have you no shame?"
"What? We have plenty of private talks here," Xavier clarified.
Isaac felt wrong for being so quick to assume they were one of those couples who sought intimacy at any place. "I-"
"But I am trying to convince her to try making love here. It is time," Xavier said, exiting the carriage first.
Isaac’s mouth was still wide open as he could not believe Xavier was about to have him apologise. "You bastard," Isaac muttered.
Again, Isaac wondered what was wrong with himself for agreeing to work with Xavier.
He had been stressed from the second he agreed to work with Xavier, and he wasn’t getting proper rest anymore. Still, Isaac followed Xavier toward the church.
"It might have little to no effect on you, but I am still burned by it. Xavier!" Isaac called out to the stubborn man after he wasn’t given a response. "We cannot enter."
Xavier ignored Isaac since there was something he wanted to test out. The last time he visited the church, only his ears bled because of the stones, but the church didn’t burn him as it once used to.
Xavier walked right up to the church steps and felt a sting where his flesh should have been burning. It was easier to deal with, which didn’t make any sense since Xavier wasn’t like Selene.
The question remained if Selene had some way of giving him this power or if the church was losing the one shield it had.
Xavier turned around to look at Isaac, who was far behind him. "Come here. I want to try something."
"No thanks. I like to not burn," Isaac replied.
"Isaac, come here, or I will drag you here," Xavier said.
Isaac reluctantly walked toward the church, preparing himself for a very bad burn, but it didn’t come. Isaac looked at his hands and then up at the church. "Has this been a fake church all along?" Isaac wondered.
Isaac never thought there would ever be a day where he could so easily walk up to a church and feel nothing. "Do I have a good soul?"
"No. This church no longer affects us," Xavier concluded.
Vampires who were passing by stopped to look at the pair. It wasn’t everyday they got to see two vampires walking into a church. It was even stranger for it to be two purebloods.
Isaac walked ahead of Xavier to enter the church. He ignored the terrified humans who rushed out of the church since it wasn’t safe in their eyes now that the vampires had arrived.
Isaac entered the front doors and looked around for the priests.
Not far behind Isaac was Xavier, who took a right turn to find the room where Cassandra spoke to the priest.
"You are not welcome here!" Xavier heard a priest yell.
Xavier overheard more chatter as more vampires approached the church, testing if they could also enter without harm.
Xavier used it as a distraction to slip away to find the priest.
As he walked through the church, Xavier wondered what the priests or the visitors had done since there wasn’t any power to keep him out.
It wasn’t Selene’s doing since she never spoke of visiting a church, and she wasn’t around all the vampires who now entered. There was something he was missing here.
Xavier opened every door he passed and eventually stopped at the third door. There was a bag with clothes and weapons placed instead like the owner of the room was getting ready to leave in a hurry.
Xavier entered the room with his hand behind his back, listening closely to the person trying not to be heard behind the door.
Bryce had his dagger ready to pierce the intruder, and once they had entered the room far enough, Bryce took his aim.
"Wait," Bryce said, startled by the intruder vanishing in a blink of an eye.
This wasn’t a human, but that was impossible.
Bryce was quick to turn around and found Xavier leaning on the door after he closed it.
Bryce was puzzled by the sight of Xavier. A pureblood had no place being a church, and it had always been that that they could not enter one without burning.
"How are you here?" Bryce asked, pointing his dagger at Xavier.
Now was a good time for him to have a holy weapon and kill Xavier for the church’s plan, but he didn’t have one like he told Cassandra. He couldn’t get one now since the church was after him for some reason, and the only way to not be punished would be to hide in this church for a while and then sneak out.
"I would like to know the answer to that as well. What have you done or what is it the others like you have done for the church to lose its touch. I wouldn’t say your God has left you to fight your own battles, but I would believe he doesn’t need the church to protect the ones he still loves," Xavier assumed.
Xavier had heard of the Moon goddess punishing werewolves, so there was a chance the humans could also be punished. Vampires were already said to be punished by living forever.
Bryce kept his stance, ready for any attack. Like Xavier, he wanted to know what was happening, but he didn’t think the church had lost its power. "The church will always be holy ground which the likes of you can never stand on. It will remain that way."
"Yet, here I stand. Have I become a priest then?" Xavier inquired, causing Bryce to frown.
