Chapter 255: Grabriel’s mistake (5)

Xavier made it out of the dungeon just in time for Selene to return with Lucas.

"Can you tell me why you suddenly wanted me to go on a horse ride? A ride I thought we were to do together so you could give me a better tour of the estate. What are you hiding?" Selene questioned, sensing something was happening.

"Leave us, Lucas. Listen to news about the church," Xavier said, sending off Lucas first. "We had a visit from Gabriel. He wanted to speak to you, but I didn’t allow it. It seems he is realising what he lost from his actions. There is no doubt he wants you back."

Selene laughed since it could only be a joke, but when Xavier didn’t laugh, she stopped. "He cannot be serious. Why now would he want me back? Why does he think there would ever be a chance for him?"

Selene felt uncomfortable hearing Gabriel wanted to speak to her.

"I feel like I would be sick just from hearing this," Selene muttered.

Selene’s marriage with Xavier was going so well that she forgot all about her plans to get revenge against Gabriel. She had left Gabriel to ruin himself, and now, he suddenly wanted to come back into her life.

Why couldn’t she get a break?

"I should have known something like this would happen. It’s just one thing after the other to ruin our time. Thank you for sending him off. You did send him off, right?" Selene asked, confused by Xavier’s reaction. "Is he here in the dungeon?"

"It is the one place I would allow him to be. He is receiving a welcoming gift along with the princess. I don’t suggest you meet with him now since it looks like he was stabbed with a holy weapon. He’s fighting it, but he’s still slowly dying," Xavier shared.

"Good. He deserves it for all the misery he has caused me, but I don’t understand. Were you the one who stabbed him, or did someone else?" Selene asked.

"Come with me." Xavier held Selene’s hand so they could return to their room.

Selene felt nervous about what Xavier had to share with her.

When they entered their bedroom, Xavier took Selene to the bed so she could have a seat.

"Either Cassandra or the priest she meets with was the one who stabbed him. It wasn’t me since I was out meeting your grandfather, and then I spent the other hours with you. He brought an enemy to this town," said Xavier.

Xavier continued, "They were always here, but I believe they set her up with him for a reason, and he was so blind with anger concerning your marriage that he didn’t notice it. I am willing to bet he didn’t look into her family before bringing her here."

"As much as I would like to place all the blame on him and watch the status he cherishes so much fade away, we cannot. There must be others like him with those who have been attacking vampires placed at their side. It is dangerous if they were placed at the side of who is in the palace," Selene said, thinking about the other dangers.

"I’m sure there are others like him who were seduced and are being used. Some of the men in court spend their time with humans in secret. Some they kill when they are done, and others they hide away so other vampires won’t find out. It is dangerous," Xavier agreed with Selene.

"Unfortunately," Xavier said as he sat down beside Selene. "I cannot be in the palace to know who is meeting with humans, and Isaac is no longer in the court. Any plan I bring up to deal with this, Darius is going to fight it, or he’ll deny it. Most of the court will back him up."

Xavier knew from experience that anyone seeing a human in secret would not want to admit it, so it would take too long to go digging around into who might be courting a spy.

"So, what do you do? The longer you wait, the more of us they attack and get away with it. This kingdom is on the brink of war, and still, the palace does nothing to stop it. Too many innocent people are dying. Leaving seems like a good idea now," Selene said, considering Xavier’s offer.

"Unfortunately, if it isn’t stopped here, it will spread to the rest of the kingdom. I will find Cassandra and everyone she is working with, but it will be dangerous. Since I won’t be working with the court, it will be even more dangerous. That’s why I am telling you now," said Xavier.

"I know how dangerous it will be, but you are Xavier Blackthorn. I would hate to think you would pick now to fail and to return home to me gravely injured. If there is a slight chance you are wounded, then I will heal you," Selene promised.

"I will do what I can to avoid worrying you. For now, I want you to stay out of the dungeon so you don’t heal Gabriel. We don’t know how you do it yet, so let him suffer before you go there," Xavier advised Selene.

"I don’t need to speak to him," Selene replied.

"He embarrassed you, has accused you of harming his mother, betrayed you, and worst of all, he killed Elsie. I’m sure there is much you want to say to him or at least see that he is suffering. I don’t mind if you speak with him," said Xavier.

Selene had a lot to be upset with Gabriel for, and now was the best time to get it off her chest so she could truly move on and not regret it.

"It made me feel good to see him regret everything, so I know it will feel even better for you. I won’t ever force you to speak with him, but if you are holding back because of me, you don’t have to. I won’t be angry or jealous over this," Xavier said, hoping Selene would be at ease.

Xavier continued, "I know you try not to speak of him or your old plans regarding him around me, but it doesn’t bother me. I would have enjoyed listening to your plans to get revenge."

"Now I feel silly," Selene replied. "There is a lot I want to get off my chest, but I will wait as you said. I don’t want to ever heal him, and if he dies before I am ready to speak to him, then I won’t regret it. I’ll move on like I’ve been doing."

Selene was more concerned about Xavier and the people he was going after.

"You’ll need to leave to go to his home, but I doubt Cassandra will be there. I am curious what happened for whoever attacked Gabriel to just let him get away. He’s a mixed-blood, so he is far easier to kill with a holy weapon. How did he get this far?" Selene wondered.

"They might have kept him alive for a reason. Their current attacks weren’t getting the palace’s attention, but injuring Gabriel would. He should have gone to the town guards or the palace, but he came here. They’ll go after someone else who might get Darius’s attention," Xavier assumed.

"I will be here, so you should go be with Isaac, but be careful. Both of you," Selene said, sending Xavier off.
