Chapter 248: To be loved (1)

Selene opened her eyes, awoken by a noise in the room.

"It’s me," Xavier said before she thought the worse. "You can go back to sleep."

Selene rubbed her eyes as she sat up. "I’m not tired. It’s still early," she said, glancing at the window.

It was still dark out, but it was early enough for Selene to get her day started.

"I have much to do, so I should get started now. Did you find my grandfather?" Selene asked.

"I did. I don’t think he is fond of me yet, but it is confirmed he has been keeping an eye on you. He is the one who killed Fiona, and he spoke of wanting to come for you when he learned your parents were killed, but since you were with Gabriel, he thought you would be safe there while he dealt with your parents," Xavier shared.

Selena focused on her grandfather being the one to kill Fiona.. Zephyr had been around Fiona in the past, so if he thought she needed to die, Selene wouldn’t question it.

"Are they well? My parents and grandfather. Have they spoken of us meeting now?" Selene said, desperate to see her family.

"Since we are still being followed by palace spies, for now it is best if you do not meet with them. They are dead to the town so we cannot make the mistake of having them spotted, but they will write to you and you may write to them," said Xavier.

Selene wanted to see her parents, but if being away from each other meant they would be safe, then she could keep doing it a little longer. "Thank you. Letters will do well to fill that void for now. I can finally relax knowing that they are well and with him."

"There is more. I spoke to him about your ability to heal. The Everharts can heal from holy weapons and enter churches, but they do not heal others. You are rare even amongst your family, so should the others know, they would want to take you away," Xavier said, stopping to give Selene a moment to take this in. freewebnoveℓ.com

"I don’t," Selene stopped, but then continued, "Why would I be the only one to do this? I would have inherited it from my mother."

"I have talents said to have come from my grandfather and others not yet done by other purebloods. Our abilities grow over time, becoming stronger. Something new may come for the generation after us. You are now the first of your line to heal others," Xavier said, amazed by her talent.

"That makes it even more dangerous if the secret is to get out. With the war, everyone would come to us for help. Most wouldn’t even ask but try to force me to heal them. I don’t want to be pestered by the very vampires who ousted me," Selene said.

"And I won’t have you pestered by them. I will always keep you out of reach from them. If your family secrets get out, you will always be safe," Xavier promised.

Xavier didn’t trust each member of the Everharts family knew how to keep their mouths shut. There was always the one relative who had big plans which involved working with other purebloods.

It always ended with stabbing the family in the back to get more power.

Sharing the Everharts’ family secret would earn a big reward from the palace. Someone could be tempted.

Selene touched the palm of her hand. All this time, she had such a rare talent. It was hard to believe.

This was all the more reason to keep her circle small.

Xavier touched Selene’s hand, hoping it would ease her from worrying too much. "I will keep you safe."

"I have brought a lot of trouble to your life, haven’t I?" Selene questioned, unable to stop thinking of how many problems she brought to Xavier’s life. "I am sorry."

"You don’t need to apologise. I don’t regret making the offer for you to come here. I sought to be entertained and you did just that with your busy life. I look forward to learning more of your secrets," Xavier said, lifting her hand to kiss it.

Selene laughed. Only Xavier would be having fun with this. "I swear there aren’t any more secrets. I hope there aren’t any since I can only take so much. Knowing this, I don’t want to hear of anyone asking us about children. It is far too dangerous."

"Since there is so much attention on us, does that mean you never want to have children?" Xavier asked.

Did knowing how special she was change her mind?

"No," Selene shook her head. "It is not what I meant. I have thought of how you might need a child from the moment I agreed to marry you."

"I am not interested in what you thought I needed then. I am asking now that you love me, if having a child is something you want. Forget about everyone else. Is it too dangerous in your eyes now, or is it still possible for us?" Xavier asked, patiently waiting for her answer.

"What you shared hasn’t changed my mind. I still believe that as we continue to grow closer, a child will be in our future, but not now. It is too dangerous even though we are safe here on the estate. We have too many enemies to keep an eye on. When that settles, we should speak about this. Only us," Selene said.

Selene didn’t want to hear anyone else’s thoughts, even if they were to come from her family.

"You are saying I should slaughter everyone now so we may speak about it sooner?" Xavier asked.

Selene laughed but also nodded her head. "As long as you don’t find yourself injured, yes. The sooner the danger is gone, the sooner we will have this talk again. I do think of these things with you. I might now say it out loud enough, but I think of our future."

"It is good to know. I look forward to the day we will have a little family of our own. Then we do not need to entertain ourselves with others. They are boring," Xavier said, referring to his family.

"I enjoyed your mother’s company, and though it was my first time meeting your aunt, she is lovely. What are you doing?" Selene asked, confused by Xavier’s hand on her forehead. "I do not get sick."

"In our family, it is considered strange to find my aunt to be lovely. What time did she leave? Selene," Xavier said, suspicious when Selene smiled.

"Well, she was prepared to leave when you and Orlork left, but somehow, she got pulled in for a drink with your mother. There was a bit of arguing followed by silence. I would like to think they talked out their differences, but they were both likely drunk, so they will forget. She is still here," Selene revealed.

It was too dangerous to send Camilla off when she was still a bit tipsy. Selene thought it was best to keep Camilla here until she was in her right mind, then send her off.

Xavier was annoyed to hear his aunt was still there. He could only take one relative spending the night, and right now, it was his mother.

Xavier was about to get up to wake Camilla, but a kiss from Selene worked well to distract him. He knew what she was doing, and since she had started it, he was going to take full advantage of it.
