Chapter 246: Grave mistake (4)

Phillip thought of stabbing Gabriel again, but then Gabriel wouldn’t last the night. It was going to take all of Gabriel’s strength to make it through the night with the first stab wound.

Holy weapons were more likely to kill mixed-bloods faster than purebloods.

Phillip stood up, keeping a close eye on Gabriel. It always amused him how vampires sometimes shivered like they were cold while others screamed that they felt like they were on fire.

"I didn’t aim for his heart, but he might die. If you don’t die tonight, it’s going to kill you slowly over time. I will pray for you to make it through the night so you can go to your king. It is time to go," Phillip announced.

Any longer and they would have more blood to spill.

Phillip turned around to leave, letting the others be the ones to pick up Cassandra and drag her along.

Cassandra was better off enjoying the life she had now. Now she had to go into hiding and be helped to find her way again.

"I am sorry. I am sorry," Cassandra repeatedly apologised. "I made a grave mistake. I won’t do it again."

"Of course you won’t," Phillip replied. "I am not an angry child."

Cassandra walked with the help of the others who treated her like she was a prisoner. Phillip was a terrible liar. She knew that he was angry. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"I- You," Cassandra gasped, taken aback by the bloody mess she encountered by the stairs. "Did you kill all of them? Some of the servants were humans."

"Were they?" Phillip spared a second glance at the bodies.

Sometimes a few people had to die for the greater good. Their sacrifices were not going to be forgotten.

"They tried to protect a vampire, but when the war is over, I will reward their families. You will ride with me for now. I want to hear from you what has become of you. What has made you lose faith in us?" Phillip asked.

Phillip led Cassandra outside the gates where his carriage awaited them. He let her get in first then followed after to take her to the others.

Cassandra didn’t want to go with Phillip, but she didn’t have a choice. She owed him too much to disobey him now and there was no running from the church since the priests and their followers were everywhere.

"I haven’t lost faith in the church. I do believe in everything you are fighting for. I want all vampires to die-"

"But you lack patience. What you did tonight could have ruined everything we were preparing for. He would have overpowered you and then, instead of killing you, lock you away to get some answers," said Phillip.

Phillip was here to get rid of Cassandra, but he had some hope for her.

Anyone could be saved as long as they listened to him.

"I would die before I reveal anything about the church. I owe you for helping me to live so long. Without the church, I would have died along with my parents. I was confused and felt betrayed after I realised you lied to me about the holy water," said Cassandra.

Cassandra continued, "Had I known there was no more water, I wouldn’t have felt betrayed. You could always tell me the truth."

Phillip smiled. "Who said there isn’t any more holy water? It is wrong to tell lies. You will only worry the others with these lies."

Cassandra frowned. This wasn’t something she came up with by herself. "Bryce told me there is no more water. I am fine if there isn’t enough for me and I understand others would panic. I panicked just like the others would panic."

"Cassandra, I don’t know what Bryce has told you to fool you, but there is still holy water. There is plenty of it, which has allowed me to craft such a fine weapon," Phillip said, inspecting the weapon with which he would slay the king.

Cassandra couldn’t think of any reason Bryce would tell her such a lie, and if there was plenty of water, why couldn’t the church spare her a little when she was sent on such a dangerous mission?

Something was wrong here, but Phillip wasn’t going to tell her.

Unfortunately, Cassandra had ruined any trust the church had in her.

’Did they even trust me from the beginning?’ Cassandra started to wonder. They had lied to her about so much, so she continued to believe that all the holy water was gone.

"Why did you kill that man? You seemed to be living well," said Phillip.

"He wanted to have children with me and turn me into a vampire. There isn’t a place for me in this world as a vampire. He was also turning on me over a lie I told about Selene," Cassandra shared.

"Selene is a pureblood. You were right next to a pureblood we could have killed and used as a message to the king, but from what I am told, you and that man pushed her away. It sounds like you were playing the role of mistress a little too well," Phillip said, annoyed that Cassandra wasn’t focused.

"No," Cassandra shook her head. "I didn’t want her to leave. Gabriel made it sound like she wouldn’t leave and it even surprised him when she did. He didn’t know she had Lord Blackthorn at her side. If I had only known-"

"You weren’t to do anything. You were to convince him to get closer to the palace and find your way near the king. All you needed to do was to sit quietly. Should you become with child, we would have dealt with that. I spoke highly of you to the others," Phillip said, regretting he did so.

"I wanted to do well for you. I truly am grateful for you saving me. If you could just give me one more chance, I can make up for this. Gabriel wouldn’t like the town to find out his wife is behind the attacks. He will keep this a secret. Trust me," Cassandra pleaded, saying anything for a second chance.

"I have the king’s interest. When I went to the palace with the king, he admired me. If you could place me in the palace, I can seduce him," Cassandra said, using this as her last attempt.

"Cassandra, when you are given the chance to do something, you must be good at it the first time. The king is a scoundrel who will fall for any beautiful woman. You must return to the church and pray. We will help you find your faith again," Phillip said, closing his eyes to get some rest.

Cassandra didn’t need the clothes she wore now. She would be dressed in white garments and taken to where she could pray as well as be prayed for.

"No. I still have my faith," Cassandra said, reaching out to grab Phillip’s hand. "I have not wandered."

"It is either this or we kill you. Those who cannot be saved must die."
