Chapter 189: Wedding Plans

James Philips’s expression remains unchanged; he feels confused and sorry to hear that Abigail will not have a grand wedding.

Seeing James’s skeptical stare, Sawyer continues to explain, "Grandpa Philips, we have planned our wedding ceremony, but we might not have a big party like others do. We just don’t like grand wedding celebrations like some other couples out there..."

This is James’s first time hearing of a young couple sharing a mindset like Sawyer’s. He recalls that his granddaughter Serena planned an extravagant wedding, inviting many influential figures from another country.

James shifts his gaze from Sawyer to Abigail, wanting to hear her opinion. Indeed, a girl like her wouldn’t dislike a grand wedding, right?

"What about you, Abigail?" he asks gently.

Abigail is taken aback by James Philips’s curious gaze. Still, she nods lightly before answering, "Grandpa Philips, I feel the same as Sawyer. I also don’t like grand weddings." She speaks honestly.

In fact, Abigail is the one who suggested to Sawyer that they skip a lavish reception. With only a few family members and friends, she believes a simple dinner with their loved ones is enough.

Luckily, Sawyer had the same thoughts as her; he also prefers not to have a grand wedding, as his birth mother would never stand by him if they were to have one. Sawyer has no intention of allowing his fake mother, Charlotte Morgan, to overshadow the memory of his birth mother on such a momentous occasion.

James Philips remains silent, but in his mind, he begins to make a plan to ensure he will present and become a witness at their wedding. Although his status as Abigail’s grandfather is not yet confirmed, he feels it is essential that this girl doesn’t get married without her family present.

They continue with their dinner.

Once the server has served dessert, James drops a suggestion that shocks both Abigail and Sawyer.

"Sawyer, Abigail..." James pauses briefly to check their reactions before continuing, "Let Nataniel and me be your witnesses. And, you don’t have to go to the court’s office; I can arrange for them to come to the venue where you decide to marry. Can you please consider this?"

Both are taken aback.

They hadn’t planned to celebrate their wedding immediately after signing the papers at the courthouse, but witnessing the pleading gaze of Grandpa Philips’s request makes Sawyer reconsider. His grandparents had also expressed concerns about their wedding plans.

Sawyer looks to Abigail for her opinion. He can’t help but smile when he sees her still enjoying her caramel pudding, seemingly oblivious to the conversation happening around her that talks nothing but about her.

He patiently waits for her to finish. After a few minutes, he gently places his hand on her back as he notices she is savoring the last bite of her pudding.

"Abby, what do you think?"

Abigail blinks several times, confused by Sawyer’s sudden question.

"W-What do you mean?" she asked shyly, realizing that Sawyer and Grandpa Philips were discussing something interesting and crucial. She didn’t know what it was because she was immersed in her dessert.

"Should we have our family witness our marriage? And maybe even host a small lunch party afterward?"

Abigail places the cutlery on the empty plate, unsure how to respond to Sawyer. She doesn’t have any family to invite to the wedding ceremony. Her grandmother still can’t tolerate long car rides, and there’s no way she would allow her to meet James Philips now.

As for friends, she only has Milan, but their relationship isn’t close enough for her to invite Milan to her wedding. Their friendship is strictly professional.

Suddenly, Abigail feels a wave of sadness as she realizes she doesn’t have a close friend with whom to share her big day.

"Gosh, Abby, your life is so lonely. Why don’t you have any friends? Why is your life so limited, confined to just Ryland and Urbangrid?" She felt terrible about her lonely life before she met Sawyer.

"Abby, if you don’t agree, we’ll continue as planned..." Sawyer says, snapping her out of her thoughts.

Abigail immediately shakes her head, a slight smile appearing as she responds, "It’s fine for me to accommodate Grandpa Philips’ idea, but is there enough time to arrange everything? It’s already seven, and we must register our marriage before lunch tomorrow, right?"

"Oh dear, you don’t need to worry about that. We have people who can take care of it," James replies softly.

James can’t hide his happiness now that Abigail has allowed him to attend their wedding. Even though it will be a small ceremony, he is grateful that Sawyer and Abigail considered his idea.

Sawyer feels he has no choice but to adjust his plans. "Grandpa Philips, I will arrange everything and inform you later about the time and place..."

"Young man, are you sure you don’t need my help? I can get my people to assist you."

"Thank you, but no, thank you..." Sawyer firmly rejects the offer. He doesn’t want the rest of his family to know about his wedding or Abigail’s true identity; she might be a member of the Philips family.

James nods in agreement. It doesn’t matter to him if they don’t need his help. The most important thing is that he will witness his granddaughter’s wedding.

Sawyer continues, "I’ve already contacted my doctor about the DNA test. He will come here to collect samples from you and Abby. They will conduct the test quickly, and I hope we get the results by tomorrow."

Abigail and James are stunned. They hadn’t expected Sawyer to make those calls during dinner.

"Thank you, young man. Thank you..." James’s voice trembles with happiness. He is grateful to learn the DNA test will be completed sooner than he had imagined.

"You’re welcome, Grandpa Philips," Sawyer replies with a smile. He finds it amusing to see the older man’s joy. However, his smile slowly fades as he remembers something important, and his expression turns serious.

"Grandpa Philips, I need you to promise me you will be the only one attending my wedding!"

Sawyer doesn’t want any other members of the Philips family, especially Serena and her parents, to show up, as they would likely ruin the mood.freeweɓnovel.cøm
