Chapter 269: Lost traces

While Kalena inside Elena’s body was losing her mind due to the man that betrayed her, Gregory on the other side kept on failing with locating his beloved Iria.

No matter how many times he tried, there were absolutely no traces of Iria inside the Beast City or the places surrounding it. He even asked some of his men to check on the outskirts of the city and tribes to no avail. As a last resort, he tried to use his mystic powers to only get repelled back by his own powers. Garrison that bastard was probably messing with both his and Preston’s powers stopping them from reaching Iria.

"Damn it, Damn it!" Gregory banged against the chair he was sitting in and reclined in his place as though thoroughly exhausted. This was actually the case because both his mind and body were exhausted due to all of the ordeal he had gone through for the past few weeks. He used many crippled and old beastmen as sacrifices so that he could increase his powers and that in turn took a toll on his body. It was not easy to conjure the essence of the dead inside his living self.

The only reason he was not leaving the city was because he wanted to keep an eye on Iria’s daughter. Lyra was a bargaining chip he could always use to lure Iria to his side. However, he knew that this was not easy anymore. That child had many powerful beastmen by her side that wouldn’t bat an eye killing him the next time they get their hands on him. He shouldn’t die.....he could never die until he gets Iria all to himself. But after he gets her though, he would make sure to kill her and himself so that they could always stay together even in the afterlife.

Yes, Gregory knew of the odds he would face once he gets his hands on Iria. Either of her mates would kill him and he didn’t want his life to end like that. And dying with his beloved felt like a beautiful thing for him. Even after his death, he wanted to separate Iria from her other mates. She could be his and only his.

"There is news of Eagle King getting a mate, Lord" Gregory’s thoughts came to a halt when he heard one of his informants. He had made sure to plant spies all around the city to not miss any important news regarding Lyra and her family. Secondly, he also ordered some of his men to keep an eye on each of the tribes inside the city just in case. All of the things had their own uses and he never wanted to miss any chance even if it meant for him getting information from the weakest tribes that could somehow turn useful.

However, what his informant said now was nothing new, "So Kyrell finally mated with Lyra?" but the words he heard next left him shocked.

"No, Lord. It seems like Eagle King mated with a female of his tribe. Alice....yes, that was her name" The informant gazed at his master as the latter looked utterly stunned. The former was like that too when he heard about the Eagle king mating with a female that was not his beloved. It was unheard of, especially in the Beast world. A beastman would die than betray the one they loved.

Even the strays quenched their uncontrollable bloodlust by sleeping with another female because they didn’t want to hurt their mates. Then they killed off the female they slept with because they felt guilty for daring to be with someone other than their mate. Later came self-harm, they would randomly attack a powerful tribe just to get killed down. This was why the strays were such a headache to the city. They didn’t mind dying.

Gregory on the other hand felt like something hit him in the back of his head while he was just about to relax. That was how he was feeling right now, "Kyrell mating with someone other than Lyra" Even the sound of it felt odd as he spelled, "He was crazy for her when I saw him the last time" he mumbled to no one in particular. When the strays ambushed the Fox tribe’s banquet, Gregory was also there keeping an eye on the battle. He had seen how only Kyrell tried to protect Lyra when all of her other mates were paralyzed in their places. If not for the latter, that child wouldn’t have been alive today.

Gregory didn’t want Lyra dead because her death would gain him nothing. Whereas with her alive, he can lure Iria to his side. He also didn’t know what happend to Lyra that day during the banquet. The child seemed out of breath as she gasped for air.

When Elenea handed him some kind of powder, he had been skeptical about it. He didn’t know the nature of that weird powder until he saw it work on Lyra and only her in that instance. All of the beastmen and females alike seemed alright in the banquet other than getting paralyzed but as for Lyra, she looked like she was in pain. Gregory didn’t mind Lyra suffering a little though. She was Theodre’s daughter after all and that was enough for him to hate her.

Coming back, he still couldn’t believe Kyrell mating with another female. It was so unbelievable that he couldn’t help but ask, "Are you sure about this information?" and the answer he received for that was one with conviction, "Yes, Lord. We even saw the princes of the Lion tribe and Silver Wolf tribe kill some eagle beastman inside the forest"

That made Gregory smirk, "Now, that’s interesting. Lion tribe and the Silver wolf tribe....their ancestors were the ones that implemented rules and regulations regarding the city. For them to break it knowing the consequences, they must have been really angry"

"The Princes did look furious, Lord" Chimed in the informant, "They mercilessly slaughtered those Eagle beastman and then let them rot as though not caring about being traced back" It was surprising how the ever-righteous Princes committed a high-level crime which they didn’t even bother to cover up. Especially Prince Noah, the captain of the city guards. The latter was a very calm person, unlike his kind. Lions were hotheaded in the first place but their prince was different. He was more of a calm and composed warrior that many looked up to. Nonetheless, the slaughter he saw back in the forest was bone-chilling. It was one-sided and felt more like a warning meant to someone. He guessed it was to send a message to the Eagle tribe.

Gregory tapped on the table in front of him while asking the most important thing in all this ordeal, "Then what happened? Did someone find the dead bodies inside the forest?" the city guards wouldn’t sit still if that was the case. The entire city would have been filled with chaos if they learned of this matter but he asked just to make sure, "What was their reaction seeing those beastmen dead and sprawled on the forest grounds?"

The informant had a disturbed look on his face and he explained the next part, "Just as we were about to spread the news of that massacre, some snake beastmen suddenly came into the forest, and they..." There was hesitation in his voice as he tried to continue.

"What did they do?" asked Gregory with a frown etched on his face. What made his informant this unnerved? He wanted to know it as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the informant hesitated in his place for a little before taking a deep breath and then said, "The snake beastmen shifted into their beast forms and swallowed down the ones that were dead. As for the other remains and the blood spilled on the ground, they promptly cleaned it with river water before completely upturning the soil to not leave any traces behind"
