Chapter 61: Chapter 52: I Don’t Believe I Won’t Get Rescued!_1
Along with Chen Li’s family of three, and Zhang Yuan from the fifth floor, Li Ming, who held the key to the mini-market, rushed to the community supermarket.
Upon reaching the entrance, he found that the food he left outside earlier, which he didn’t think highly of, had disappeared. He peered around the residential buildings, guessing that some boldly fortunate resident had walked down from their building and taken the food he had prepared in advance.
However, having intentionally left those provisions there, and discovering his truck—always parked outside the residential building—untouched, he didn’t bat an eye. Instead, he opened the supermarket door, briskly walked into the storage room and shut off the rumbling generator.
He visited this place twice a day to check the generator, so he was familiar with the routine. After turning it off, Li Ming screwed the cap back on the oil can, stood up and disconnected the catches of the three large freezers. He then turned to Chen Li’s family and Zhang Yuan:
“Take a look around to see if there’s anything else you want, grab it. Zhang Yuan, help me pack up the socket. Once I’ve loaded these three freezers onto the truck, we’ll leave here.”
After instructing them, Li Ming stretched his arms, firmly clutched the sides of the freezer and lifted it. He then walked it out of the supermarket, carried it to the truck parked under the residential building and loaded it. He flexed his arms, feeling good about it.
Hence, he walked back and forth between the supermarket and the truck, moving the remaining two large freezers full of frozen food, including meat, to the back of the truck.
Chen Li led her mother and daughter around the supermarket in search for supplies. As their hands filled up with items, Zhang Yuan helped Li Ming pack up the cords and boards. Afterwards, she began moving cooking essentials into the truck.
When Li Ming returned to move the generator, Zhang Yuan had already filled the patrol car he had driven here with these supplies and was in the process of transferring them onto the truck.
He looked at Chen Li and her family gathering household necessities without a word, and then proceeded to the storage room to haul the heavy diesel generator.
“If you folks have grabbed enough, pack it up in your backpacks. Let’s go.”
Upon Li Ming’s call, Chen Li’s mother, who was still stuffing items in her shopping bag, seemed to wake from a daze. She quickly grabbed a large backpack for sale from the nearby wall to pack her selected items inside.
Seeing this, Chen Li silently rolled some large backpacks and tucked them into one for storage. Then she helped her mother carry the gathered items and, hand-in-hand with her daughter, followed Li Ming to the residential building.
The three women were panting when they caught up. Li Ming walked into the truck cabin, placed the last piece of large equipment – the generator – and saw three bags coming towards him, he extended his hand and helped them place them into the truck.
Then, stepping out of the truck cabin, he saw Zhang Yuan, in her jeans, still moving supplies to the truck. He immediately waved for her to stop.
“I’ll take care of these. Take a break or find smaller things if there are any left you want to take. If there aren’t, bring the three carts from inside the supermarket over. Those little things might come in handy later.”
With his hands dirty, Li Ming didn’t touch Zhang Yuan’s face but patted her on the buttocks and said with a smile.
“Alright, thanks, dear. However, I already have everything I need and have taken it before, so I’ll go with Chen Li to bring those carts.”
While Zhang Yuan stood with her legs apart, she knew well that he was showing concern for her. She suddenly felt as sweet as if honey was smeared in her heart and responded accordingly.
“Go on.”
Li Ming nodded, patted her bottom again, and Zhang Yuan immediately nodded in return. Then, she called out to Chen Li cheerfully and they went together to bring the carts.
Hearing that there were three carts in the supermarket, Chen Li immediately led her mother to fetch them. Her daughter Yinyin followed, hopping and skipping. She looked at Zhang Yuan curiously, “Auntie, your lower leg trousers are so clean, but why are your thighs and buttocks all black?”
“Pfft…”
The question from Chen Li’s daughter almost made her laugh. She managed to control herself and lightly patted her daughter’s shoulder: “Yinyin, Auntie’s pants got dirty when she was working just now.”
“Oh.”
Yinyin nodded, fell silent, and quietly followed behind her mother and grandmother to the supermarket. The little girl hopped and skipped lively as she walked, occasionally looking to the sides and seemed very cheerful.
It had been days since the start of the apocalypse and she finally stepped out of the house today. Her mood was obviously good, which had significantly helped alleviating her previous shock.
Seeing this scene brought a smile to Chen Li’s face, as if even her footsteps lightened while holding her daughter’s hand.
Only Zhang Yuan blushed slightly, blaming Li Ming for not behaving properly when greeting her – his dirty hands touched her clean pants, causing her some embarrassment in front of the children.
Thinking of this, Zhang Yuan quickly took two steps forward to meet them at the supermarket, picked up a small toy to tease the little girl, and then found a handcart inside the supermarket with Chen Li and Chen Li’s mother.
Before leaving, Zhang Yuan noticed the remaining dozen or so bags of rice and flour and guessed Li Ming’s intention to leave something behind for others. Nevertheless, she still added a few bags onto the cart and pushed it towards the truck.
At the back of the truck, Li Ming had already moved all the supplies that Zhang Yuan had prepared to the truck. Spotting Zhang Yuan and the others pushing the cart over, he understood Zhang Yuan’s intentions upon seeing a few bags of flour and rice on her cart.
“Alright, leave these things to me. You guys get in the truck quickly, we’re about to head out.”
Li Ming didn’t say much. After they pushed the cart to the back of the truck, he waved them on.
“Thanks, darling.”
Zhang Yuan smiled and nodded, handing the cart to Li Ming, and then gestured for Chen Li, Yinyin, and her mother to follow her to the front of the truck.
Chen Li looked back at Li Ming, pressed her lips together tightly, and then hurried up with her daughter.
Li Ming first put the bags of flour and rice in the truck, then added the three handcarts that may be used later. Seeing that the truck was now 80% filled, he shook his head, closed and locked the door, walked around the rear of the truck to the driver’s seat, and sat in.
“Ready to go.”
Li Ming started the truck, looked around the interior of the cab to see Zhang Yuan sitting in the front passenger seat and Chen Li sitting cross-legged behind him. Chen Li’s mother sat behind Zhang Yuan, and young Yinyin was held in Chen Li’s arms.
Upon hearing Li Ming, the women all nodded to signal their readiness, and once Zhang Yuan had securely buckled her seatbelt, Li Ming immediately turned the steering wheel and drove out of the community.

“Humm….”
Different from a quiet security patrol vehicle, the launch of the heavy truck generated a roaring sound. The heavy body slowly left the residential area and disappeared into the road.
In the residential building on the fifth floor, Peng Zhi silently watched the departure of the truck, knowing that his wife was on it.
Only after the truck disappeared from his sight did he grit his teeth, hurriedly go downstairs to the supermarket, excitedly grabbed supplies to stuff into his backpack, then carried a bag of rice and flour in each hand, and frantically ran back home.
When he finally arrived home on the fifth floor, although he was panting heavily, he still wanted to go back and get more. Seeing that Li Ming and his wife came and went for so long without any issues, he guessed that it was temporarily safe outside, hence he dared to make multiple trips.
Despite being breathless after climbing up to the fifth floor, Peng Zhi gritted his teeth and went back down again. He slowly made his way to the supermarket only to be dumbfounded by what he saw.
The remaining bags of rice and flour that he didn’t get to take just now were already gone, with only a packet of spicy sticks left on the ground. Startled by the shoe prints on the ground, Peng Zhi was bewildered.
“God damn it, did someone else come and take the supplies?”
Peng Zhi clenched his teeth in annoyance and regret. Since he had come down, he couldn’t leave empty-handed, so he picked up a big pack of water and then went back home.
Just when his legs were shaking from exhaustion by the time he climbed back to the fifth floor, relief washed over him as he closed the door. He cursed the ones stealing his supplies and then comfortably lay on the bed. Looking at the food he brought back, his face brightened.
“Just wait and see, the rescue team won’t leave us behind!”
After speaking, Peng Zhi looked at the empty room, then in the direction of the truck that had taken his wife away, suddenly he felt a hollow emptiness in his heart.
