Chapter 41: Chapter 37: The Final Step_1

Li Ming listened to Zhang Yuan’s words, his eyebrows twitching slightly. They were currently in the living room. One look upward, and he could see the only room in this two-bedroom flat where he had never set foot – the bedroom door.

Having such a woman in this doomsday scenario couldn’t be better.

Hearing her now, how could Li Ming not understand? This was the essential step to becoming his woman all the way.

“Let’s eat first, then you go to my room to get some food. Save some of the leftover porridge and steamed buns, prepare some vegetables. I’ll bring them to him, then I’ll come back to get you,” he said.

Li Ming smiled and addressed Zhang Yuan. The slender Zhang Yuan nodded vigorously and gently began eating her lunch. Once she finished eating and heard Li Ming’s words, she packaged some food and handed it to him.

She then prepared some of today’s leftover meals, placed them in Peng Zhi’s lunch box, and gave it to Li Ming.

“Let’s go.”

Li Ming looked at the food prepared by Zhang Yuan – half a bag of rice, some pickles, and a bunch of almost rotten vegetables. He didn’t mind, lifted them with both hands, let Zhang Yuan hold the lunch box, and led her to the front room.

“Click…”

Zhang Yuan stepped forward to open the door. Li Ming walked in and saw that it was indeed a marital bedroom. Peng Zhi’s room was slightly bigger than his and not only had a large bed but also a TV, a wardrobe, a couch, a dining table, and even a vase on a balcony outside.

A photograph of Peng Zhi and Zhang Yuan hung on the TV wall, and a water dispenser was placed next to the door.

Looking at the bed, a pale, very frail man sprung up, his eyes fixed on Li Ming and his scantily clad wife holding the lunch box.

Peng Zhi’s body trembled a little. He stared at the scene in front of him, a mixture of anger and bewilderment in his heart. But looking at Li Ming’s robust figure and feeling his own powerless body, he felt fear.

“Gulp…”

Peng Zhi swallowed, his eyes fixed on the muscular man in front of him.

Li Ming looked at the man before him without any intention to speak. By this point, he didn’t believe that the other person didn’t understand what was happening. He just placed the food he was carrying on the table in his room, and calmly looked at him.

Zhang Yuan glanced at him, casually placed the lunchbox on the table, and then turned to the dressing table.

Peng Zhi glanced at his wife, who had begun to put away her cosmetics, then looked at the calm and composed man in front of him. He swallowed and seeing Li Ming’s gaze fixed on him, he couldn’t help but muster the courage to ask, “Wha…what does this mean?”

“No hidden implication. You should have guessed it. Zhang Yuan doesn’t want to be with you anymore, she wants to be with me. This food is a way out for you. From now on, she’s moving in with me.”

Li Ming glanced at him calmly.

Peng Zhi was stunned, his eyes wide. He looked at his wife, then at Li Ming who was sitting, and finally, his gaze fell on the food on the table. He remained silent.

Seeing that he wasn’t talking, Li Ming didn’t feel like talking either. He thought that Zhang Yuan was packing her stuff a bit slow, so he offered to help.

“Mmm, okay, all the clothes are in the wardrobe. Check what you like me wearing the most, take that. Oh, take all the underwear, I’ll pack the cosmetics and shoes.”

Zhang Yuan didn’t look at Peng Zhi once. Hearing Li Ming’s words, she smiled sweetly and replied.

“Oh, something I like? Well, I’ll have a good look then.”

Li Ming smiled and went up to the wardrobe, opening the doors. He saw an array of clothes, some for men, some for women – no need to guess, all the women’s clothes must belong to Zhang Yuan.

“This business suit looks good. I remember the night before the apocalypse when I saw you in the elevator, you were extremely attractive in it. I’ll take this.”

Li Ming spotted a neatly hung professional women’s suit in the wardrobe. Satisfied, he took it out, held it up with a smile, and showed it to Zhang Yuan.

“Okay, I’ll wear it for you tomorrow.”

Zhang Yuan’s lips curled into a smile, recalling the night they first met before the apocalypse. She chuckled to herself, replied, and then turned around to pack her makeup.

“This red dress is nice, you blew me away that night when you wore it with makeup on.”

Li Ming picked out a red dress and laughed as he took it out.

“Stop staring at me.”

“Oh, these hot shorts we should take, and there’s quite a few JK outfits too. We’ll take all of them…”

“My goodness, there’s even such spicy lingerie here, wearing these feels even more exposed than being naked. We’re taking these too…”

“This pair of skinny jeans is good, very flattering to the legs…”

“This sweater is nice, fits well and shows off the figure…”

“…”

As Zhang Yuan had said, Li Ming was truly picking out clothes from the wardrobe according to his own preferences. As he selected, Zhang Yuan chimed in with her opinions. It was as if they were teasing each other with banter.

They carried on as if Peng Zhi, who was sitting on the bed, did not exist at all.

Peng Zhi sat rigidly on the bed, his gaze empty and unseeing. Every now and again, he would glance at Li Ming, then at Zhang Yuan, anger flashing in his eyes.

But when he looked again at the food and felt his own ailing body, his anger faded away like a receding tide.

Swallowing, he suddenly gave in to his hunger and crawled to the foot of the bed, wolfing down the leftover food.

Zhang Yuan, who had just finished packing her makeup, paused, and with a cool and impassive look, glanced back at him. She never expected that this man didn’t have the courage to even struggle. She sighed a bit disheartedly but her mind was much clearer. She zipped up her makeup bag and walked past Peng Zhi, who was eating, with it in her hand.

Li Ming became alert as soon as Peng Zhi made any movements, but seeing him scrounging for leftovers made Li Ming’s mouth twitch. However, he laughed and picked some more of Zhang Yuan’s inner garments and warm clothing, and shoved them into the large bag beside him.

Zhang Yuan placed her makeup bag at the entrance and then went to grab a bag of sanitary napkins. Seeing Li Ming had picked up a bag of clothes with both light and thick clothing, she chuckled lightly. Then, after looking through the bag and seeing it was full of clothes, she opened a drawer and suddenly said to Li Ming.

“By the way, darling, here’s my stockings, and pure white ankle socks. Do you like them?”

Peng Zhi, who was eating, paused for a moment, then lowered his head and continued eating.

“I wondered why I couldn’t find the stockings, all of them, yes.”

Li ming’s eyes lit up, and he swiftly packed all the stockings, ankle socks, and variously colored socks from the drawer. Zhang Yuan giggled and added a few scarves, earmuffs, and gloves into the bag.

“There’s nothing left to pick, I’ll just grab a purse, a lipstick… Oh, there are my boots and high heels, sweetheart, would you pick them up for me?”

Zhang Yuan zipped up the large bag of clothes, looked around and casually grabbed a few small items. Suddenly, she remembered about her shoes, pointed towards the shoe rack and asked.

“Alright, let me do the picking.”

Li Ming grinned, knowing that nice shoes could indeed make things more interesting.

He walked to the shoe cabinet and confidently picked two pairs of over knee boots, two pairs of high heels, two pairs of sandals, and all the remaining flats. He put them all into the bag.

Throughout the entire process, Peng Zhi remained silent and continued eating.

Seeing that Peng Zhi showed no signs of resistance, Li Ming hefted Zhang Yuan’s shoes in one hand and her clothes in the other. Zhang Yuan, carrying her small items, unhesitatingly followed Li Ming out of the room.

Peng Zhi watched intently as they left. Just as they were about to exit, he suddenly spoke, “Wait, can you… can you give me some more food…”
