Chapter 74: Chapter 72: Eliciting a Confession

“Brother Gao, it’s me, hehe…”

Li Pan gave an embarrassed smile.

Gao Wenbin frowned, “Why didn’t you take the minibus? Why did you run out here on your own?”

“I rode the tricycle because the shop had deliveries. I missed a bus and the next one was two hours later, so I was anxious and took the vehicle out, thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal to head back to the farm. Little did I know I would run into… them.”

Li Pan explained weakly, shrinking his neck, not daring to look up.

Gao Wenbin, angered, knocked on his forehead, “You really are…”

“Brother, I was wrong.”

“Xue Dong will be here soon; you can explain it to him. But first, come back to the base with me to make a record.”

“Okay. Should they receive some treatment?”

They were briefly treated just now; the wounds weren’t healed and were still bleeding, only slower.

“What treatment? They committed murder and robbery and still want credit? Back to the base.”

Gao Wenbin, furious, dealt a heavy kick, tied them up, loaded them into the vehicle, and took them away.

Back at base, Li Pan went to make a record. Unexpectedly, he ran into people from the Inspection Team who had come down to check and stopped her to make another record.

“Hello, we are from the Inspection Team. We need to question you further about the recent case; I hope you will cooperate.”

A female inspector from the Inspection Team approached to ask questions. Her attitude was quite friendly, but her eyes were haughty, her smile did not reach her eyes, and she lacked warmth.

Li Pan felt she was being thoroughly examined from head to toe, an uncomfortable feeling, but he smiled and nodded to leave early.

“Okay, go ahead and ask.”

He purposely used respectful language to avoid trouble.

“Why did you choose to ride a tricycle today instead of taking the minibus?”

“Oh, I have a shop at the Farmer’s Market, and it ran out of stock. My child called me to deliver more goods, so I missed the bus at noon. Waiting for the next minibus would take two hours, and I was anxious, so I drove my own tricycle back, thinking this route was regularly trafficked and relatively safe.”

“Aren’t you afraid of robbers?”

“Actually, I haven’t encountered robbers in these years; it’s quite safe. The Patrol Team is patrolling all day and night in three shifts, so there really hasn’t been such an incident before. This is the first time it’s happened.”

Li Pan narrated calmly and evenly.

“I heard you rented two farms; can you manage them without any disasters?”

“It’s manageable. I’ve hired superpower users who work very hard. There are definitely disasters, but we can pull through by working together. Does this have something to do with the robbers?”

Li Pan asked quietly, slightly furrowing her brow.

“Of course, it’s related. Maybe it’s your apparent wealth that made the robbers target you. Just answer my questions truthfully, that’s all.”

The female inspector’s demeanor suddenly became stern, adopting a somewhat domineering attitude.

Li Pan slightly furrowed her brow.

“I heard you exchanged quite a few things at the base, and the Base Commander specifically takes care of you guys, on account of you growing up under his guardianship.”

“Where did this idea of care come from? Every exchange I’ve made is on record; you can verify it yourselves. We indeed grew up under the Base Commander’s care, so I mostly sell farm produce to the base because it’s simpler and the money comes back faster. But as for what you mentioned about special treatment, there is none.”

Li Pan seemed to realize something.

“Are you sure? If we find anything inappropriate, your farm might also be repossessed.”

“Are you sure you’re inquiring about the robbery, or are you trying to entrap me? What’s your badge number? I need to record it.”

“You don’t have the right to know my badge number.”

The female inspector probably had never faced such doubt before. She abruptly stood up and slammed the table, her demeanor changing instantly, her eyes filled with disdain and contempt.

Li Pan slowly stood up, unleashing the intimidating pressure of a high-level Wood Power User, pressing down heavily, with vines appearing behind him, swaying accordingly.

The female inspector retreated awkwardly, her eyes gaining a more sinister look.

“Repeat that, what’s your badge number?”

Li Pan’s tone was calm, even gentle, showing no signs of anger, only that the vines gradually multiplied, taking control of the entire room, densely filling it with vines.

They only had a tiny space to stand, with absolutely no place to step down, all covered by vines and roots.

“What do you want to do, attack an inspector? I am arresting you now!”

“Attack?I haven’t done that, I was just showing you a superpower, I forgot to tell you, this room has cameras, and they’re always on.”

Li Pan slightly lifted his chin, signaling her to look upwards.

Looking up, the inspector indeed saw four cameras at the corners of the ceiling, positioned in different locations, ensuring panoramic filming without any blind spots.

Her face instantly darkened, her fists clenched, and her expression gained a hint of murderous intent.

“Let me remind you, I am a high-level Wood Power User, my combat abilities aren’t strong, but my defense is exceptionally robust. You are in my domain now, you stand no chance if you make a move. And you, merely a mid-level Fire Power, can’t burn me to death.”

Li Pan calmly reminded her, you’re doomed if you try, I won’t go easy on you.

“Pan’er, that’s enough.”

It was then that Xue Dong finally spoke up, opening a crack in the door which was blocked by the Star Tree.

Li Pan retracted the vines, the room reverted back to normal, and she sat down, but didn’t retract her domain.

The Base Commander followed right behind, entering the room.

He glanced at the female inspector, his face as dark as the bottom of a pot.

Vines snatched the notebook from her hand and handed it to the Base Commander, “You should take a look at this, to prevent us both from being framed. I need to know her badge number, I want to file a complaint.”

Li Pan directly filed a complaint.

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

The female inspector, accustomed to throwing her weight around, had never been treated like this before.

The Inspection Team wielded significant power; each base dreaded them for they could concoct a list of charges and mistakes leading to the base being penalized, their resources docked, and subjected to further rectification and oversight with new personnel installed to supervise, which was extremely bothersome.

But Li Pan was a common citizen, not an official, and you can’t lord it over me, I have the right to appeal if you bully me.

As long as someone appeals, the Inspection Team has to make rectifications, take a break, and suspend their work. The higher-ups care a lot about public opinion and deal with the issues promptly.

One could say the law is robust, all systems are binding, and no one can truly cover the sky with one hand.

The Base Commander glanced at her notebook pocketed it, and then slapped her across the face.

“Who gave you the right to spout such nonsense here, slandering me, such audacity!”

The Base Commander was not afraid of her; now that they had irrefutable evidence, capturing her was a certainty—with surveillance footage, written records, and audio recordings, she was finished.

The female inspector, having been slapped across the face, looked at the Base Commander furiously, yet dared not retaliate.

If there was a possibility of striking Li Pan, there was no such possibility for acting against the Base Commander, a high-level Gold Element Combat Superpower User with extensive combat experience, capable of killing her effortlessly.

“Lock her up.”

The Base Commander ordered.

No sooner had he spoken than Xue Dong launched a fire tongue, and the vines quickly followed, tightly binding her.
